I have found a good donor bike.  A complete 1992 GSX-R1100 with the engine toasted royally.  I went to look at it.  It has a 6 inch wide rear wheel and a nice USD front end and whatever else is useful.

Has anyone ever swapped in the whole swingarm from the Gixxer into an FJ? And the front end as well?  Opinions please!!

With a big enough hammer and sufficient cash, anything is possible.

I've heard of GSXR front ends being put onto FJs.  Biggest problems would be how much shorter the GSXR forks are, and clearance through the fairing.
However, since both ends of the GSXR are intact, wouildn't it be easier to just put the FJ engine in the GSXR ?

Tim (Axiom-r) did a front and rear R1 awap, it is awesome looking, makes his FJ looks like what Yamaha would if they brought back the real FJ bike.

I used 2008 gsxr1000 front ends on all 3 of my fjs. The 2007/8 front ends were over sprung from the factory. I had mine dialed in at the first rally. And he had to soften it up quite a bit. Made a huge difference. And the 2007/8 gsxr1000 has a hydrolic clutch. Used the clutch and brake masters on the fjs. I did a lot of research before deciding what front end to use. Turned out to be a good choice. Awesome brakes and suspension. And a ton lighter.... And it gets the chicks.

Actually Pat. I'm having my other 2 sets of fork caps extended. Luckily the guy that does all my suspension work. Is also a machinist. And my next door neighbor is his friend. And an awesome welder. It costs alot more than the extensions. But I think it looks alot better. And It saves some weight. So I will have the 2 sets of the extensions. For sale soon.

They are yours. If you want them Pat. (As soon as he gets the extended caps done)They are the second design. Without the taper. Alittle more adjustment and alittle lighter.  Not so overkill. They still have the 3 pinch bolts. But they have the bolts on opposite sides. So they face out on either fork. Didn't think of that on the first set. They cost me $160 to have made. Was hoping for $150 plus shipping.

Oh yah, Pat make sure that the top of your USD forks are 50 mm. I assumed all inverted forks were 50mm. But when I was doing my research I found out that some are smaller and some are larger. Larger isn't an issue you could hone them out the 1-3 mm, plenty of meat left. But if they are smaller. Your pretty much screwed.

Definitely, if they are for mounting the GSXR1100 front end, I need them.  Let me know when to buy them.  The forks I will have are for a 1992 GSXR 1100. Don't know what the dimensions for the forks are either.  Hope to know this weekend...supposed to strip the bike then. What did you do for triple trees on your swap?
Greg

giantkiller

I used the gsxr triples with the stem from the fj triples. I had the base of the stem built up with weld then machined down to fit the gsxr bottom triple and pressed in. The top needed a collar made to fit the gsxr triple top. Axiom-r did a really good write up of the. R1 front. Almost exactly the same for the gsxr. Except he bought after market extensions that use a set screw. The ones I had made have 3pinch bolts. Alittle over kill. But I would rather have them tight, and secure.. So I had these made.

I don't know what Conlan is talking about "USD forks get the chicks", I seem to be doing just fine.
