Starter issues

Been awhile.

Having issues with my starter when cold.
Pushstarts just fine, usually. Occassionally the clutch seems to bind making it difficult to pushstart but that's an infrequent problem and usually happens when it's hot and I ride the starter unsuccessfully.

Gonna do a rebuild.
Gonna use the manual.
Will type up an article for the files section since we don't have one yet, assuming all goes well.

Just posting this for any tips/tricks from guys who've done a rebuild on their starter.

Thanks~  :drinks:

Can you describe your starter problem in more detail? Different problems can seem like a starter, or clutch, or starter clutch.... If your starter really is stuffed then a new 4 brush unit from Ebay is a better option... Some hot start issues have been dealt with by cracking the throttle open 1/8 to 1/4 turn. Cleaning the starter switch and or adding a relay for the coils have also had good results.

I'm seriously considering a kickstarter conversion, thanks for all the tips.

Symptoms can include any/all:

  • slow turnover when electronic starter engaged
  • turnsover but wont start
  • gear semi-engaged with clutch engaged (only when hot) - verified by shifting into neutral
  • very slow turnover (1-2/second)

I had a bad time with seafoam. Starters been acting up for over a month now and I decided to run SeaFoam through the fuel-lines & crank-case.
Ran the crankcase for ~1,000mi with cleaner, had Real trouble getting it running, oil-light flicked on, had burned through 2.5Q of oil in 1,000mi. Sludge. Changed the oil. Runs better now but the starter is still a problem. Pushstarting every morning, and nearly every start when running errands.

Gonna replace the plugs. Had some misfiring issues that were largely solved by retooling the battery terminals, but still experiencing occasional misfires when warming up. Significant progress - was misfiring every 2-3 seconds, now it's only 1-3 times during warmups. Randy suggested replacing the headgasket, that's pending.

Battery is fully-charged on a trickle-charger. Outputs 14V @ 3000, 12-13V idle.
Alternator works.

Recently dripped/bled the clutch. Fresh DOT3.
Rebled the front brake MC at same time.

Chain needs replacement; which reminds me.
The manual says OEM chains have rubber gaskets, is that the standard 220chain they usually sell or is that a markup item? Can ask retailer ofc.

Sprockets, fork seals, rotors, rear suspension spring all need replacement & if anyone knows a good sheetmetal guy in SouthernCal the bike failed 3miles from work at a gas station on my first day which resulted in a baseball-sized dent in the tank.  :dash2:

BTW I started work for the electrical Union Monday, so I can finally start the rebuild I've been planning for over a year.
Checks start rolling in Wednesday. Just trying to keep her going until then.

I'm here, rebuilding my life and trying to rebuild my motorbike in the process.
Consider it a life-building exercise.

Have you bothered to read your quote lately?

I haven't hurt anyone here. Worst I've done is upset Randy by asking questions I can google.

Hmmmm ... Short memory, eh? Perhaps you may remember a past encounter we had? [url][http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?;topic=11877.0/url]

A few pages in I made a post you might recall:

<snip>

Are you serious about the drain plug falling out and running out of oil?  Maybe you should just find a real mechanic and drop the bike off.  Tell him what's wrong, ask how much, and start making money to get your bike fixed!  Most engines will not survive running out of oil, so maybe you have 'sticky pistons' after all ...

So Brian, maybe the Leopard has changed his spots, but I doubt it.  Prove me wrong, please!  In the meantime, I'm gonna stay a spectator.  Youre not sucking me in, AGAIN.

beer and bedrest, general. put some sunshine on it.
happy to hear things are even keel.

ed, you'll be pleased to learn when i zipped over to the local motorbike dealer in town they gave it a listen and said it's the battery.
fully charged so i'm scratching my head, but at least that's a quick fix.
you'll also be surprised to learn i can do a fullservice brake&axle job on an Audi in ~90 minutes.

Yup, but not my brakes.  Speed is nice, but I don't hurry on a brake job.
How's the finger?

Best of luck Brian.
