Are the FJ 1100/1200 transmissions interchangeable between all models/years?

Thanks

The gear ratios are the same.  The later model bikes got strengthened shift forks, and maybe slightly wider gears with slight undercutting of the engagement dogs.

So, I can take a complete transmission from a late 1200 and drop in my 1100?

I'm pretty certain that you can, but I've not done it.
Ask Randy, I'm sure he'd know for sure.

Sorry, I missed this thread.

As long as the transmission is from an FJ then you are good to go, they are all identical.

Now, if you are attempting to change out a transmission from a xjr1200/1300 then the output shaft is 8mm longer and they will not interchange.

Thanks a lot.

I can get a '93 low mileage FJ1200 complete transmission for little money, so that will go into the FJ1100 this winter  :good2:

Being one of the last years, wouldn't a '93 have the current shift forks? Did Yamaha make further improvements after '93?

Yes, the shift kit will be ordered  :good2:

Yes, the 93 was the last year of the FJ but the XJR1300 is still a current production engine/motorcycle. The shift forks I sell, is what is currently supplied by Yamaha for the XJR1300.

There were 4 generations of FJ's in the USA:

1st - '84/85
2nd - '86/87
3rd - '89/90
4th - '91-93

My understanding was that Yamaha beefed up the shift forks starting with the Gen 4 bikes (or was it the Gen 3's?)

So Randy, the question is: Are the current XJR shift forks improved beyond the late model Gen 4 shift forks?

3) Replace your old stock rubber brake lines.

Yes, all FJ forks were shorter than currently supplied.

But when he gets it all apart he can look at the photos of each fork and compare, or he can send me a photos and I can tell him if they are the same as the current supplied forks.

Have the donor trans inspected by a professional... I got burned buying one for my 86.
If you are rider who hits the rev limiter, I would urge you to get your gears undercut and use the new beefy shift forks from an xjr along with a shift kit.
If a less spirited rider , a stock trans with beefy shift forks and shift kit will be plenty strong.

Thanks. I am probably a less spirited rider, rarely going above 6000 rpm  so I am sure a standard transmission from a late FJ will be sufficient

Maybe I missed something, but unless there is a problem with your existing trans, why change?  There is no benefit from a later trans, unless you go to an undercut gear set.  If you're not a "spirited rider", then there may not even be a benefit from an undercut trans!
I can sure see the reason for upgraded forks, having bent a few myself.  But change just for change's sake is just busy work IMHO.

Well, I am not changing it for the fun of it  :nea:

I have the infamous second gear problem, so it would be a cheap fix and I have never heard about any one having problems with the pre ยด91 transmissions.
