New fuel petcock doesn't flow fuel

Got around to replacing my fuel petcock  yesterday with genuine Yamaha part 1TX-24500-02-00. After the install the bike fired right up and ran for maybe 30 - 45 seconds, then died and wouldn't start again.  Removed the petcock, and not a drop of fuel came out of the petcock or fuel line. Looks like the bike started and ran until the carbs were empty and then wouldn't start again because there was no fuel flowing to the carbs. Put the original petcock back in and the bike started and ran fine. How much vacuum is required on the petcock to open it up and let the fuel flow? I hooked it up to a mighty vac and pulled a small vacuum on it but still couldn't get any flow from the fuel port using the suck test. Thinking it might be defective but not sure. Called the place I bought it from and since I am not a certified Yamaha mechanic I can't return it and am therefore stuck with it. Any help would be appreciated. 1987 FJ.

The vacuum required to open the valve is very little, you can test it by sucking on it with your mouth. If you are truly stuck with it, open it up, see if you can find the defect. This is one reason I prefer to buy from Randy at RPM, he stands by his products and customers.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

I am going to go with defective.

I had two of the last three have the same problem after I sent them my customers. I replaced them with working petcocks that I tested prior to sending out.

If you want to email me the receipt I can call my Yamaha distributor and see if we can work out something to get yours returned. Unfortunately, since you did not buy it from me that might be a problem, but I will do my best to try and get you all sorted out.

Also, if you still have the box, save it because that helps a lot.

Send me an email with the paperwork and a photo of the end of the box with the bar code and I will see what I can do to get you a replacement petcock for the defective one; randy@rpmracingca.com

Big thanks to Randy for helping me out with this problem. New petcock installed and it works!
