I'll check that on my '92 3YA; have just ordered the R6 side stand yesterday which should arrive today or tomorrow.

Will post pics and info.

A quick check on the Yamaha part # shows the same sidestand from 1999-2002 on the R-6's

Does the FJ side stand switch work with these side stands?

Not without some modification... the little sheet metal part that makes the switch is not on the R6 stand

It's only welded on the back side, so it should'nt be hard to move over to the R6 piece:

The hook for the sidestand is reversed to the FJ stand, so while we're welding, might as well turn it around.  Using the FJ spring worked out better for me than the R6 stuff.  Since I'm going to have to repaint (or powder coat) the thing anyway, I'll also buzz off the R6 stop bumper, since it doesn't work for the FJ.

How much difference does it make?  About this much:

Thanks for the great pics and write up. Is it worth the trouble and are you happy with it?  Dave
A pistol is like a parachute, if you need one and don't have one you will never need one again.

That metal piece must be on newer bikes only. I don't have that on my FJ1100 from 85'.

Well, I just did it a couple of hours ago, but I think it's worthwhile.

I have the YZF600r 17" rear wheel conversion that I did a few years ago, and shortened dogbones (rear wheel 1/4" off the deck when on the centerstand).  I never had done anything with the side stand, though, just suffering with it until now.  The R6 stand only moves it a few degrees, but it's much more in line with where it originally was.

I'm going to get another R6 stand to have modded and prettied up, then I'll do up the one in the pics and put it on my project bike.  Until it gets here, it'll work as-is.

Have just checked this item and made exactly the same experience.

The R6 stand is about 1" longer, so the bike is app 5° steeper on the sidestand. This, IMO, makes some difference and 'feels' better.

There is some welding and grinding to do to make it fit, as mentionned above.

The front stop bumper of the R6 stand has to be grinded off to make the stand move forward about 5° more, bike would roll over when parked nose down.

I also feel the R6 holder for the spring too weak to keep the stand up securely in bumpy curves. I will move it to the rear and about 5mm downwards when I'll do the welding.

Just need to find the time to go for it, could just do the quick check after receiving the stand yesterday.

Cheers Jo

So, what I get from this is...... For early FJs pretty much a straight swap.  Later model FJs with side stand switch, will require a few little most, but not hard to do.

Correct?

Not correct. All FJ's have a side stand switch. Some owners have just removed them.

I like mine. It's how I turn off my engine. A good habit I've learned after dismounting and forgetting to put my side stand down (being tired and road stoned) When the engine is off, I know my side stand is down.

Now I just have to remember to not walk away from my bike leaving the key on...the headlight helps.

Hi Pat.
Most 1100's i have seen in Australia, don't have the stand switch, (no mounting point for it on mine) but i wish it did have the stand switch. I am paranoid about riding off with the stand down (i have done it once and narrowly averted disaster) I don't have the clutch lever switch either. No wires for either in the loom. I have been known to be wrong on many occasions though.

I do like the idea of this stand mod, as my bike has a huge lean on the stand and is hard to pick up to ride off.

On this occasion Mark, you are correct about the side stand switch not being on the early Aussie FJ's. I've had two 85's and neither of them ever had a stand switch on them or any provision for doing so. I presume our ADR's of the period did not require a stand switch to be fitted.

Thanks Mark and Pete, I didn't know this.

I wonder if the EU bikes had the switch? I know all the US bikes had one.

As I already mentioned in the thread  : mine doesn't have one either.

Yes you did, sorry, I assumed (incorrectly) you had yours removed....Looking at your pictures (again) I see no mounting points on your lower frame cradle for a switch.

Thanks again guys. I stand corrected. :flag_of_truce:

No worries. Takes a real man to admit he was wrong.  :good2:
Actually I don't even have one on my 2002 V-rod.

fjfool

damn, thought i had an easy solution without any welding for the stand switch
maybe someone here can elaborate on my thought process as my solution will still require some welding
the r6 stand has an actuator for the switch, but it is on the inside of the stand
