Whats the black thumb wheel next to ignition?

Well you guys are teaching me a lot about the 87 fj1200 I just bought, so I'll ask another question. To the right of my ignition there is a black plastic round wheel. Its about the diameter of a dime and has ribs on it. Its connected to a 1/4" diameter rod that looks like it runs forward into the headlight area. I hope my description is good enough for someone to know what it is. Thanks guys, Dale

Sounds like the throttle cable adjuster....

That's to adjust your headlight.  If you're two-up for example you may have to compensate on the fly.

Headlight elevation adjuster.  (Do I win a prize?)

Be careful using it, or you'll get to look for a replacement.  If you want to use it, be sure the headlight reflector isn't stuck.  I'd recommend taking the fairing off, remove the adjuster & rod, & manually cycle the reflecor through it's range.  If it's OK, then reassemble & use as needed.

If the universal joint between the headlight and adjuster know is still intact, you probably should slide a split piece of vinyl or rubber tubing over the joint to dampen most of the vibration that the joint will experience. Many of us have discovered that the universal joint has been destroyed by vibration.  I'm not sure if they are still available from Yamaha, but I would not bet on it. I know some of the members here have used 1/4" drive universal joints from the parts store to replace a failed joint.
