Spring Rates

 I am around 200 pounds and do not ride two up very often on my 86, my question is for you gentlemen who have upgraded to the racetech springs, people who have followed the chart for there weight and riding style, do any of you guys wish you went up one more factor of spring rate now that you are running them and have logged some good riding time on them? I like to twist the wrist and want to get it right the first time. I already have the valves sitting here when our dollar was a little stronger against the greenback I picked those up but Randy was out of stock on the springs that suited my weight.  ???

I was going to try to help out there but since you have RPM's valves I would recommend you contact RPM.  Randy has the rates figured for the valves he sells. It is a system so to speak. Fire an e mail to Randy or Robert.

I have the RPM valves in my '89 currently and hover around 175lbs. Prior to that they were in my '86 with '89 forks. Most of my riding is just me and no luggage and I have .85 springs. Randy mentioned that .8 might be even better. That said my pre-load spacer is short so maybe I may be in the sweet spot with no added weight. My recent ride yesterday in the twisties of the Angelest Crest was a blast and I was feeling really good in the corners. At 200lbs. you will be close with .85 to .9 springs. The RPM valve is designed to do more of the suspension work than traditional suspension. As George commented, call or email Randy for the best starting point. You only need to get close with the spring. The pre-load spacer is easy to change your self to find your own sweet spot.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

.85 springs for 200 lbs. You are not even close for the .90 springs.

The spring rate is very important and you are better off being too light. If too stiff the bypass will not work and you will be unhappy.

Thanks for the input Randy, .85's it is, I wish our dollar was not so low cause it cost so much for the parts and the shipping. Will put my order in end of season up here. Example of big dollars, I ordered a big bore piston for my XR650L with head gasket and after the dollar crunch it came to 318 dollars with shipping, when my daughter went to pick it up, they tacked on another 45 bucks for duty fees, for a total of 363 bucks for one JE piston, I wish I new the price off the web site to tell you guys but to me its just crazy money to build horse power up here in Canada. Thank God the FJ has hp to spare!
