sleeve slave

Hello
Because my clutch is still not 100%... used clutch slave leaking but not pouring like the original I have decided to show it to my machinist friend and get his opinion on sleeving the slave. Do you folks know the original bore measurement and would stainless be the proper material to use?

Re-boring the slave has been covered here (we have a search function) before and can be done. I recommend 303 SST as it is easier to machine. But a new slave from RPM is likely gonna cost you less than the fees from a machinist. But if he really is a friend then you cost may work to your advantage. Keep us posted...

The bore of the clutch slave likes to corrode, especially if you like to run DOT 5 (non hygroscopic) fluid. Water collects at the bottom of the bore.
If you do get a light corrosion in the bore, I've used a brake hone tool on a cordless drill to do a quick cleanup scrub of the surface bore. The key words being "light corrosion" and "quick cleanup".

Sometimes the bore is just too far gone. As Monkey Mark said above, no big deal, just buy a new slave.....
...but looking down the road, there will be a time in the near future when new clutch slaves become rare. Kinda like '84/85 gas caps or fairing plastics.

Sure, you will still be able to get seal kits....but sleeving corroded bores will be the only way to go.

I am going to say the slave cylinders are going to be available for many, many years to come. The engine is still in production as you can still buy a 2015 XJR1300; http://www.yamaha-motor.eu/eu/products/motorcycles/sport-heritage/xjr1300.aspx

So, that means there are million upon millions of bikes in circulation and replacement slave cylinders will not be problem for many years to come, unlike the 84/85 gas cap that is now more than 30 years since it was in production.

Now 84-88 vacuum petcocks are a different story...

We never did hear how Earl's slave worked out for him.

Thanks Randy, that is good to know about the slaves.
Although, if you can sleeve one with the stainless bore, it should last a good long while.

The answer to the disappearing vacuum petcocks is easy: A conversion to fuel pump....with the benefit being able to run a real honest to God fuel filter.

Our fuel tanks are not getting any younger so the crud will be inevitable, especially with eathnol laced gas.

The fuel pump conversion/fuel filter will be my next mod on the '84.
