1994/1995 FZR1000 6 piston calipers

While searching for brake upgrades for the Vmax, I came across info on 1994/1995 FZR1000 Sumitomo six piston calipers that would be a direct bolt on for the '89 and later FJ forks. The six piston calipers were only used the 2 years and are not readily available, kind of like the '87/'88 FZR front wheels. I found a set right before the central rally. I was tempted to do a quick install, but rally rules would apply.

I have been informed to watch out for the brake pads not making full contact with the outer diameter of the rotors. I have 300mm rotors and I will run the brake pads in and then check to see if there is any part of the pads not making contact with the rotors. I have a set of 320mm FZR rotors that I can check for fitment.

Fred, what are you going to do about the master cylinder?

With the increased piston volume of the caliper, you are most likely going to need a larger displacement master cylinder, possibly the 19mm radial version to not have to "double pump" the front brakes.

Looks interesting.

I currently have a Honda VTR1000 installed. I was thinking about putting a master cylinder from the same bike on....1994 FZR1000

What makes and models run a 19mm bore master cylinder???

Fred

Must current bikes are running large bore (19mm+) radial master cylinders.

Not sure if there is a O.E. style cylinder that large.

Are folks having problems stopping? I'm running blue dots with FJ master, and I worry about the back end coming around on me.

You made me smile (not sure if intended) but an upgrade is good fun, and after all if it improves something is even better...surely?

You ought to know by now, when it comes to moditus, the more options available, the better. :good2:

I don't think Freds's fitting them for better braking. Even our very efficient blue dot / EBC HH combo rarely see temperatures that has them working at their best. There is a point of diminishing returns when the surface area of the pads becomes too great, and enough heat, which is crucial to braking efficiency, can't be generated.
I suspect this is why Yamaha didn't continue with them and why they did not become popular with other manufacturers.

One of the hazards of going to FJ rallies. You always come back with good ideas.

3) Replace your old stock rubber brake lines.

I am running the 2007 R1 front master cylinder on my FJ with the corresponding 6-piston calipers....all stock 2007 R1 stuff.  The master is a 16mm bore and it is more than enough stopping power!

cheers!

Well, maybe just a tad... :)

Funny thing, tho... I can't see em from the pilot's seat. I can only tell if they're biting or not, which is paramount. Other than that, brakes just slow you down!
