Near as i can tell if your swapping just rims you need a set of 88+ forks then you need 88+ rotors because the FZR ones are to big..i'm not sure 89FZR will do this but you need to tell us how much your planning to do..you will also need either stock 88+brake calipers or what most of us done is gone to blue dots...

If your planning a full blown swap to entire FZR forks brakes and rim you will need the FJ stem with FZR triples for this I'll let someone else add to this tread who has done that....send up some pics to show what you have to help us help you..

http://www.fjmods.co.uk/FrontForks.htm   here is a pretty good link on another fj mod site that is this exact swap. if anyone has time to take a look and evaluate the info contained i would appreciate it. from my limited knowledge base it seems as though the guy doing the swap is competent...thx

The set up in your link is not for an 89 FZR. The EXUP uses a USD fork, the 89 does not.

Not true.

The '89 FZR1000 EXUP had conventional forks.

In 1991 the FZR converted to USD which are the forks I have on my '84

What am I missing John?

The set up in the link is for a '89 FZR EXUP with conventional forks (not USD's)

There are advantages to this swap: 43mm stanchion tubes, 17mm axle, 320mm rotors, better calipers, 3.5" wide rim...

BUT...

They are still damper rod forks. http://racetech.com/ProductSearch/2/Yamaha/FZR1000/1989-90

Personally, I would not go thru the process of conversion unless I could *at least* get cartridge forks.

Also, according to the Barry Edwards, the FZR conventional forks are prone to leaky seals:
"...I soon got tired of the Exup front forks I had first fitted to my FJ. That's not to say they were not an improvement on standard, it's just that despite them being rebuilt by specialists (Maxton), they soon started leaking at the fork seals. A quick trawl through the Exup related web pages soon revealed that this is a common problem...."

Sorry. My mistake. I do realize the 89 has conventional forks. However my 91 FZR, with EXUP has USD forks. So when referring to an EXUP FZR, one can be confused with different years.

brentjgordon

the exup moniker is problematic to use as a reference. so if i put an emulator in the fors would the swap make sense? i also just read up on swapping the swungarm along with the rear wheel as if i just do the rear wheel i need to narrow the rubbers and rubber housing 7mm...thx for any help...

Yep, definitely...some Race Tech cartridge emulators are the way to go, along with some 1.0 kg/mm straight rate springs.

The FZR oem .809 kg/mm fork springs are too soft for your heavier FJ....pictures, we love pictures!
