alternator/generator brushes and o-ring replacement?

Hi folks,

I'm looking at the GYSM (page #  6-22)  for my 84 FJ1100, while  preparing to replace the  alternator/generator brush assy. There is an o-ring that goes on the end of the "stator coil assembly".  Not sure if that o-ring is gonna be round or square in cross section.  Is that o-ring easy to find at a well-stocked local o-ring/seal  store?   Using "Official o-ring language"....does anyone in the FJ group happen to know the dimensions/nomenclature  of that o-ring?

I know that the o-ring that's currently installed is the original, so I assume that I should replace it when I go in there to replace the brush assy.

I've  heard rumors that buying it from Yamaha is expensive.

Also, if anyone has been thru this whole brush replacement procedure, are there any "gotchas"  or "FYI"S"  that I should be aware of?  I have been inside  the unit  over the years to check brush length, but have never needed to change 'em. I have the new brush assy in my possession.

Thank you.......

Lee, for $60 +/- a few $, just get a new Chinese 4 brush starter. They crank much better and will give your starter another 20 years or so...

Lee I see that o ring (item 2) for the generator is not available from Yamaha.  I don't know the size perhaps someone might have an old one they can measure for you.  OR just be real careful when you pull out the generator not to tear it and then reuse it.

Mark is referring to the starter and if you ever have to change it out then the recommendation is to buy the 4 brush starter.

Lee,

I have a pretty good assortment of o-rings at my disposal.

I have (2) of these in the garage. One with SAE sizes, and one with Metric sizes.

I could bring them over if you want to try an match up an o-ring.

The only thing is that I am not available this evening. Baseball practice for my 6-yr old.
I could bring them over tomorrow after work (My day ends at 2:30 :good:)
