Aftermarket fairing lowers (Ebay) - differences between 1989 and 1990 -on?

I've seen several differnet styles of aftermarket chin fairings and fairing lowers for FJs. This particular one interests me:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YAMAHA-FJ-1200-FJ1100-Full-Lower-Belly-Pan-Fairing_W0QQitemZ110479938043QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item19b91e11fb

but the ad states that "TO FIT 1990-93 THE BUYER WILL HAVE TO ADD TO THE FRONT CURVED DOWN SECTION ON THE UPPER FRONT PART OF FAIRING.  I CAN PROVIDE INSTRUCTION ON DOING THIS, THE 1990 BIKE I CHECK FITTED THIS TOO HAD A REPLACED FAIRING FROM AND EAIRLIER YEAR BIKE, ONCE I CAN GET A HOLD OF A STOCK 1990 UPPER, THIS WILL NOT BE A PROBLEM."

I have a 1992 model and am curious about what the specific differences would be between the 89 and earlier fairings compared to 90 and later fairings, specifically where fairing lowers would meet the fairing upper. Has anyone here already fitted these lower to a newer FJ, or have a better idea/description of what would required to make these lowers fit the newer (1990 and newer bikes)?

Well it seems like there are a number of people that read my post, but no answers.  :scratch_one-s_head: How about some closeup photos of the lower edge of an '89 or earlier fairing, so that I can compare with what's different on my '92?

I just picked up the Silver and Purple paint colors to color match my OEM style replacement chin fairing to my bike - around $70 US per pint! At least it will leave me with plenty of touch-up paint to go after the smaller chips and scratches elsewhere on the bike. It might also be practice for painting the new lowers mentioned in the post above, assuming they don't require too much modification to fir my '92, otherwise I'm going to stick with just the chin fairing.

Gooday FJato,
There is a difference between the two upper
fairings.
The later model is a bit wider and different shape.
Apart from some pics of my 89 I really can't help.

I've often been asked, 'What do you old folks do now that you're retired'?

"Well. I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background, and one of the things I enjoy most is turning beer, wine, Scotch, and margaritas into urine."

don't lose hope, everybody is currently trying to find a camera or dig their bike out of the snow.

a lot of us read posts everyday , but we don't post up unless we can help.

cuts down on the clutter.

On the 84-86 fairings, the lower edge of the fairing is straight.  On the 89 and later (don't know about 88's -- didn't get them in Seppoland) the lower edge of the fairing extends down a bit further toward the front.

To see what I'm trying to describe, go to the Gallery button up top, and select the FJ Bike Photos.  First page, second pic - Kopfjaeger's red and white (an 86 or 87 - not sure which) shows the straight lower edge.

Go to page two, second row, fj1289's ugly flat black beast, is an 89 - you can see the curved lower edge of the later bikes.  Sounds like the guy on eBay got the change off by a year - the curved style began in 89 vice 90.

I do have a 90 fairing at the moment - I just pulled the engine today to put into my 89.  I could contact him and see if we can workout something to use it as a model.

Okay, now I see the differences. My dad had one on the first '84 models, in fact I loaned him the money to put down on the (then) "fastest production sport bike on the planet". I just couldn't remember the fine details other than how smooth it felt at 135+mph!

It would be fantastic if you would be willing to let your fairing pose for a fitting. I would imagine that there would be interest in the lowers for the newer style fairings. It sure caught my attention. The only other ones that I have been able to find (also on Ebay) are expensive to start with, not to mention shipping across the pond.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360227454936
