That's so true now.  I used to own a '97 R1100 GS, before the ADV's came out.  It was still within fiancial reach of me back then 'cuz it didn't have all the farkles and the "adventure" fad/craze hadn't caught on yet.  There was no aftermarket accessories like there is today.  It was still manageable handling wise as it was about 525 lbs (dry).  i.e. I could still pick it up when it fell over - a lot.   :pardon:   My safety gear was steel-toed cowboy boots (still in a closet somewhere), an old Belstaff jacket (still have it - but seems to have "shrunk"), and leather gloves (that I still use today).

But the ABS system would occasionally fail due to stones getting stuck in the teeth of ABS system and scratching the sensor.  When I asked them why they would offer it as an option if they knew it would fail, I was given the sheepish look of the dog that just shit on the carpet.   :unknown:   Oh well, like they say, there's one born every day...   :sarcastic:  Also, the gen 1 Bosch throttle bodies would surge at low revs when stuck in traffic (ironed out in the next gen).

I had always wanted one since I test road an '86 R100 GS airhead, plus I was a big fan of the Dakar (still am) when nobody else here knew what it was.  I traded in my '78 R80/7 for it (in hindsight a mistake).  I live in the Toronro area and in order to give these bikes a true workout, you have to travel about 6hrs north to ride the myriad of logging roads to nowhere.  It was great when I was single.

Then in '99 I was hit by a car on my way to work and the bike was totalled.  The insurance company was lowballing me as usual, so I went to the dealer where I got it serviced for a ballpark figure and he tells me "Well... it wasn't in pristine shape and there were quite a few scratches..."  WTF?!   :scratch_one-s_head:  I thought that was the reason it was built!

If I could afford to keep an old R100 GS airhead, I'd snap one up.  But it's all about image now.  It's BMW's No. 1 seller in N.A. and I'll bet less than 10% actually get muddy.  Like all new bikes, you can't touch them without fucking them up so the dealeres have you by the nuts when it comes to servicing - unless you are already a seasoned mechanic with all the gizmos in the back shed.

I enjoyed mine while I had it despite it's peculiarities, but I wouldn't touch a new one.  Now a used KLR might just be an affordable second one...

Hey Paul, if you want a dual purpose or dual sport machine and your looking towards a KLR, if you really want a true dirt bike that can fly down a road check out an XR650L, the KLR has better road manners but blows in the dirt, the old boys say there is no such thing as a dual purpose motorcycle, meaning we need two or more machines, but the XR can move and get real dirty and comes real close as a true DUAL SPORT, there I said it.  :hi:

PaulG I love your posts because you are a real person. You tell the true story. Most people these days buy things because of what the marketing company sold them, they want others to see them and think, " Wow, look at that guy!".
Almost all impulse spending these days is by people buying into an idea, rather than implementing one. Us old bastards ride around on cheap ass inline four Yamahas because we love them. It matters not one iota to me what fancy fat tire Ducati has used on some new Diavel or Dingwad 2000. I ride an old POS no one else cares about. I will ride it 100 k on a Sunday, and then 700k another day because I love to. I don't care if everyone at Tim Horton's thinks I am a complete wad. ( In fact I prefer it, because then they won't ask me  any stupid questions) I ride for the pure pleasure. I have had bikes for 30 plus years. Never have I cared what others think is cool.
Unfortunately the image today is too important. I never see adventure bikes up in the Canadian north, four wheeling in rough terrain. I do see them putting along my nicely paved street.
Last summer in upstate New York, we came across 20 - 30 Dual sport BMW's and KTM's at a gas station. We were like , " Hey, cool!. Look at those guys!, awesome!". They were so EFFING cool they wouldn't  even acknowledge our existence. What a disappointment, to see others doing what they love, and be so self absorbed they couldn't see we were doing the same.

I've always considered these an option. Problem is, used ones are very few up here. The ones that are available are recent models and expensive.  I think those who own them probably drive them into the ground eventually, so they end up at the wreckers instead of on the market.

I confess I'm probably too old to be tear assin' down trails anymore.   :cray:  Even though the KLR is more sedate (even more now with the recent revisions), there is a monumental amount of aftermarket stuff for them.  The Honda is probably the better bike at what it does, but it looks like the aftermarket support seems to be geared more towards competition.  Mind you if I could find either for around $2K, it would tempt me despite the fact it might cause a tad bit o' domestic disruption...  Only problem is where would I put it?

I looked very hard at the KLR vs the XR. My criteria was;

400cc plus
Street legal
Under $2000
Single track capable

I bought a 94 XR650 and truly love it. the KLR is a great bike however, I love the tight single track stuff and it's just too heavy for that.the XR hasn't changed since 93.

Hey Scott, I ride a 2000 XR 650 L, my buddy picked up a KLR. finally we got together for a ride, we were running to Quadeville from my place, ditch trail came up and I fly off the road into the trail of sand and soft loam with jumps over passing gravel roads and he could not believe the Honda or my attitude when I ride it, he sold his KLR the following month. This bike has also broke bones and I realize that pain actually hurts now so more respect came floating in, funny how that works. If I was ever to go a modern newer machine say 2010 and up I would get the XR650R, now that is a serious big dirt bike!!!! Also a part of me would like to settle down to like you mention, say a 400cc machine with modern power and suspension so I wont have to fight with this big brute but its so much fun I cant help but like the tall lanky air cooled lump.

The thing that is so funny to me, is I know several bmw riders this describes to a T. All the fancy gear and talk a good ride but never do it. Don't wash anything, so it looks like you have been doing all this riding. Take the bike down for the inspection and it has 500 more miles than last year. The number one activity with there bike is hooking and unhooking the battery charger.

My wife doesn't find the GS video funny at all. I wonder why? I now think it is possible to spend more on "farkles" than you did on your new bike. JMO
