I have an 87 California fj1200. there is this 7 wire component called "diode" in the manual, and i'm curious what is does. It doesn't seem to be a component in the Non-california bikes.
Hmmm. I got noth'n

Based on the very little information provided I will guess emissions... Tree huger stuff...
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

NO, based on the very little information provided its probably the RECTIFIER turning AC from the alternator into DC to recharge the battery and operate the bike.

Yes, another example of very sensible "tree hugger" like stuff.

The Clymer's schematic, now that I have had a look at it, shows this as common to USA (Not unique to CA) and it has similar features to the UK FJs...

All bets are off as the original information provided is bogus....

Thanks Arnie...

I think the diode pack is part of the starting circuitry.

I don't have the schematic in front of me, but it prevents a "sneak" start path from a certain combination of the clutch/kickstand/neutral signals.

Okay, looking at the starting schematic, there are 2 diodes. One prevents the starter from engaging when the trans is in gear and the side stand is down and the clutch is not pulled.  I can't figure out what the other one does.
