Im looking at a 89 fzr front rim which has a 17mm axle diameter, I know that it needs to be 14mm, so the seller is telling me that I can turn it into 14mm by changing the bearings to 14mm, how can this be true?

Pat Conlon

How is your 15mm axle going to fit in the 14mm bearings?

You are not the first to try this. To date, no one has succeeded. Some have made spacers to put the correct bearings in the incorrect wheel. Not recommended. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Your other option is to fit '89 or '90 FZR forks and triple clamps. Not a straight swap but not that difficult. You also get the benefit of using the 320mm rotors. As far as I know the bearings you need are not available .  Pete.

hi sir, i am doing a '91FZR front wheel swap- it has the 17mm axle
another member suggested just enlarging the axle holes in the fork lowers and re-tapping the threads on the one fork leg
he also suggested having a machinist do it to keep things square
cost me $50 for the labor
if things go well, i should have this wheel mounted today

I did this. Mistakenly bought the '89 FZR wheel, and simply sourced the 17mm axle, bearings, spacer, and speedo gear. Then drilled the forks and added a castellated nut. Never looked back.

Rick, a good way of solving the problem. What did you use for brake rotors?

Another hitch in the giddy-up... the stock rotors from my FJ wheel wouldn't fit the hub, so I had to source the rotors on ebay as well, and found the right diameter 320mm with the hub pattern to match the FZR wheel. The search turned up YAMAHA XJR 1300 1200 FZR EXUP GENESIS 1000 YZF 750.

Rick, 320mm rotors are too big for the FJ forks. 298 or 300mm will work.

MOTOMYSZOR

I can't find any FZR1000 rim with 15mm axle in normal price...... But I can find plenty rims from 91-95 FZR with 17mm axle.

And I have three questions:

- 91 FZR uses 320mm brake rotors. Bot could I use OEM FJ1200 brake discs? I will be direct fit?

- How difficult is drilling procedure for fit the 17mm axle in fork? Will cordless drill with 17mmm drill enough?
- And fork leg with thread: better option is drill it through or use threader and make new thread to fit new axle?

Pat Conlon

The '87/88 FZR750 uses the same rim as the FZR1000. Don't forget the 17mm speedo drive.

I would not hand drill your fork legs...that's just me.

I'll let others who have done this mod chime in...

OK these are wider than what you should be using but they are an alternative that should work please look up the spec and you will see just don't get the crown version.  This type of bearing does take allot of pounding / punishment, I can't think of any reason why they should not work other than the thickness.  305702C2Z  just copy and paste into google or whatever search you use.    Russ
