Hello again everybody,

Just went to see my mechanic as he told me the bike would be ready today... Well it wasn't! It appears the rings he ordered from yamaha with the correct part number are an incorrect size. So next step he's chasing someone from the Legend car racing series hoping to get an insight as to where to get the correct rings for it.

Damn.

Ruffy,

Hi all,

Just back off shift, been to see mechanic and it turns out that the rings need to be 5 thou oversize and cant be sourced in Oz, so try on here to see if they can be bought elsewhere or try and source standard barrels and pistons. Hoping someone can point me in a direction other than scrapping the project.

Ruffy, is that 5thou over after he has done a re-bore? or is that 5thou as it stood when you gave it to him...... ie what was on the pistons.

And is that with 1100 or 1200 cylinder block and OEM or aftermarket pistons?

Just curious is all.

I am sure Randy rpm@swaybar.com here on the group can help you.....he has a Legends car, a couple of FJs and runs his own parts supply shop on top of his day job!

And I'm pretty sure he will pipe up here.....but its Thanksgiving over there at the moment, so don't expect it till after the holiday.

So are you still going to do cosmetic mods (plus the engine re-build), or is some suspension modification on the horizon too?

Cheers

I got a "Wiseco" 3mm oversize kit (pistons, rings, gaskets etc) only about 8 or 9 mths ago. The kit was $760 and the rebore $320. There was a bit of stuffing around and I would highly recommend dealing direct with the agent, not a bikeshop. I'm in Melbourne. The agent here is Ken Colvin, he's been the Wiseco agent for 28 years. If you want any other info about parts or the job or the outcome, let me know. That's for a 1200 not an 1100.

It is 5 thou as i gave it to him not sure on the bikes history, i thought it was standard.

I am not very familiar with the dimensions of the 1100 as I have never had to rebuild one. If your mechanic is telling you he can't get parts, then I recommend jumping up to a 1200 configuration.

I believe you can bore out the 1100 block to fit the stock 1200(1188) piston as well as going up as high as a 1219 per the Wiseco specs; http://www.wiseco.com/Catalogs/Powersports/YamahaCycleStreetOverbore.pdf. The only other change will be the installation of a 1200 head gasket.

Good luck, and make sure you educate yourself on this topic and ask your mechanic a lot of questions so you get the best job possible. If you are unsure of his answer, let me know and I will try and clarify.

All of the other parts on the engine are the same as the 1200 so parts will not be a problem. The only thing different is the 1100 block and pistons.

If there is anything I can do parts wise for the 1200 let me know.

The 1100 cylinder will only go from 1088 to a 1188, you can buy a 1200 clylinder and it will fit you might have to clearence the cases. If you want to go larger, then again you could go 1250 cylinder and go 1300 plus if big is what you want.

1200 cylinders will fit the 1100 case without modification. If going to the XJR1250/1300 block the case must be clearanced.

Ruffy,

Haynes says the FJ1100 has two oversizes: +0.50mm and +1.00mm and the FJ1200 one oversize: +0.50mm.  5 thou oversize (0.13mm) seems too small since it is about the allowable barrel wear limit.
