Having served in a Marine Corps Recon unit and flown on, jumped out of many of those aircraft, rappelled out of many helos, climbed out of subs and under ships I thoroughly enjoyed that. Made me feel 20 years old again. All of the captions were correct and can be verified by any veteran. Thanks Noel

Yes...most enjoyable!

One that I often keep in mind while shooting pool is a paraphrased quote of Napoleon Bonaparte:

I recall one saying in my helo days as a army medic....

"Helicopters don't really fly....they are so ugly that the earth just repels them..."

Also, a sign at Fort Sam Houston (San Antonio) where I went to Medic AIT said:

Mankind's ability to inflict pain, injury and death *far* exceeds mankind's ability to heal.
For every advancement we have made in treating battlefield trauma, the weapon systems just get worse...exponentially.

Geez Dave, you have lead an interesting life, and that's no doubt only part of it. You've got half a James Bond movie right there but I guess all that pales compared to piloting the FJ.(or perhaps age has made that decision for us  :biggrin:)

Wow, what a fantastic read and the photos were awesome. So sad to think that so many of those fabulous F111s are now just landfill near Ipswich :(.

Yes Noel the service provided the training and paid me a little extra for it. They called it hazardous duty pay. I thought it was funny they paid me for having fun. Haven't made a jump or dive in years but still enjoy my bikes and hope to keep riding to a very old age. Met an 86 year old at Las Cruces, New Mexico Harley Davidson who noticed my FJ and came over to talk. He had just traded one of his FJR's in for a new Harley. He was excited about geting it and I asked him why. More leg room he said. I can understand that. He took me behind the place to show me his FJR when they rolled out his new bike. He jumped on and rode it around front. By the time I walked around front he already had it on his trailer tied down. I remember thinking I hope I'm still in his shape and still riding at 86.  Dave

Yeah, old thread now, but thanks Ribbert. As a retired USAF ANG E-6, and a working pilot, I can agree to pretty much all of those. Especially the one about "now I know what a dog watching tv feels like"!
US Army ROTC taught me more than a few of those. :biggrin:

If any of you want to know what the life of an infantry dogface is like, may I suggest one of Bill Mauldin's books about Willie & Joe?

Pete, we are showing our age. My son learnt in a glass cockpit from day one and (shudder) uses an iPad (which is allowed) when flying with analogue instruments instead of paper maps.

You can be unlucky. On the third day of his first ever full time flying job he had a complete power failure an hour from his base and at 200ft. He hand lowered the gear but could not get three greens and landed expecting the gear to fold up under him.
This was after suffering a prop governor failure ferrying a plane (a single) to the job site.

Makes electrical gremlins on the FJ seem not quite so drastic.
