rear sprocket size

Hi guys I'll be doing the suzuki 17'' 4.5 rear wheel  conversion on my 93 3xw soon and I'm wondering what rear size sprocket to use  I'll be using the standard 17t front I want to try and keep the same gearing as standard and not revvy with using a larger rear sprocket ...what size rears do you guys run ? cheers Scott

For your year 93 .. 17/40 ... some have gone to a 18/38 for mileage reasons.

I run 17/41 for most the time and switch to 18/41 for cross country runs.

With your wheel swap being done it will give you a lower profile tire and depending on which tire you use , may be equal to 1-2 teeth on the rear sprocket.
Before you did the swap , what was your 5th gear rpm at cruise speed .  you can use that to determine what sprocket will get you back to normal.

My advice is to run what you had on the stock wheel and see how it feels to you.

The GSXR wheel I bought had a 43t sprocket, which I have found to be a little high on the revs at cruising speed, especially with the 17t. I then bought the 18t front sprocket from RPM, which dropped the revs to a more acceptable level, albeit still a little high for my taste, so I ordered a 40t suzuki rear sprocket to go with the 18t up front, which should be a good combo.

I think it was 4000rpm @ 70mph so wanting to try and keep to that kinda rpm standard gearing on the fj jus now is 17/39

There is a gearing chart in the files section that can help you..

The 17/39 should be ok  . run it and see how it does.
It is easy to change a rear sprocket later if you want, Or maybe change the c/s to an 18 .

The gsxr wheel I bought has a 48 tooth sprocket on it, fantasic if you want to ride around on the back wheel, but I'm getting a bit old for that, so I'll probably get a 38/40 to keep the gearing much the same as it is.

Put in what you had assuming that is what you like), then play with the gearing to get it where you want it.

unless something has changed since i checked a few years ago.... the smallest suzuki sprocket you can readily buy is 42, anything smaller was 'custom /special order' ...if you look and find let us know

The question is, will a 40 tooth fit on GSXR hub and still get the 530 chain fully seated on the sprocket? (without touching the hub)

I have the YZF1000 Thunder Ace wheels on my bikes and I can tell you that the smallest sprocket I can run on the hub is a 39 tooth..
I tried a 38 tooth and the chain's side plates (right side) dug into the soft aluminum hub....so, I have the scars to prove it.

The only thing I can add is what Pat alluded to. Make sure your rear sprocket is for a 530 pitch chain. From memory I ordered a GSXR 750 sprocket.

JT sprocket has a good web site.  Check out there catalog. And they are available just about everywhere even e bay.  I ran an 18/38 then later converted to a 17/38 but that all depends on the type of riding you do.

I have a '92 GSXR 750 rear wheel and got a sprocket for it from Johnson Woods here in CA with 38T. It was off the shelf but not their shelf. So they are out there.

Echo on the pitch. I had a hard time getting a 530 sprocket for my Gixxer wheel. I had to have one custom cut from Sprocket Specialtys.
