Givi clamp diameter?

My 91 FJ has a homemade tubular steel rack done for the Givi hard luggage. its not perfect but it works well enough. The problem is that the PO used electrical tape wrapped round and round to get the diameter big enough for the Givi clamps to clamp onto. of course this wears down over time and is not, in my opinion, trustworthy any longer.
So unless a proper rack lands in my lap for a sensible price i'll be rebuilding up the existing round rack to hold the luggage.

so:
1) does anyone know the actual diameter of the Givi mounts?
2) thinking of using that carbon wrap tape that is at the hardware stores at the moment. This is a canadian link : http://www.homehardware.ca/en/rec/index.htm/Hardware/Automotive/Accessories/Miscellaneous/Miscellaneous/1-x-40-Roll-Repair-Wrap/_/N-2pqfZ67l/Ne-67n/Ntk-All_EN/R-I8659197?Ntt=repair Apparently its sandable and certainly will out last electrical tape. there are those of you that can machine things but that's outside of my scope i'm afraid. would any other materials be a better choice?

thanks in advance,
Don

instead of electrical tape try 10mil tape . Used for roll bars and such.

Hey Don,

Not sure which Givi clamps you're referring to.  I have a full Givi Wingrack II with the top plate and Y204 fit-kit on my FJ.  I'd be happy to measure up anything if it helps.  The only clamps I can think of are the ones that go around the rear sub-frame...and those are the diameter of the sub-frame.  Let me know and I'll get to measuring!

Also having a hard time trying to figure out your question.  Most if not all the FJ's with GIVI hard side bags are Monokey bags on a WingRack.

What model of GIVI bags do you have Don ?  If you can post a picture?

I think he might have something like my setup.

now... do you mean the diameter of the tubing?

That looks like a GIVI a PL mount for GIVI monkey luggage. I think GIVI has another mount and luggage design that sits or rests on "hooks" built into the luggage resting on the lower bar itself ?  I would like see a picture of what Dan has.

He thinks it is made out of "Homemade tubing" so it probably doesn't match anything offered that most of us have used.
Depending on how much change to the diameter you need to make, you could slit a piece of rubber hose (like fuel or heater hose) and clamp it on the tubing with hose clamps?

Sorry guys, sometimes when you think you know what your saying its not that way for the readers. oops.

the hard luggage has two clamps on the top that go over top of the rack and then lock closed. i need to make the home made rack tubing diameter larger to allow the luggage to hold securely is all.
Or replace the homemade rack system entirely...

Thanks for the picture. The case on the left appears to be contoured and the one on the right looks to be flat on the mounting side?   Could just be an allusion.

The case on the left looks like a a case designed to mount on a PLXR rack used on some of the newer bikes.  Almost any way you shake it out you are going to have to do some custom work (could be minor).  While not a direct answer to your question the links below might be able to help you in solving your problem.

Here is a good site from a dealer in Canada with some good PDF's (scroll down to the PLXR picture)

Here is a PLXR type mount on a Suzuki Bandit. Scroll down and look at his top tube cover. A "fix" for yours might be to slit a rubber hose and slip it over ? Or perhaps plastic tubing like PEX?

Here is a picture of a SWMOTECH mount for those style of cases.  Note item 24.

Unfortunately a complete "KIT" designed to mount bags on an FJ is just about non existent.
Hope some of this helps.

Thanks for that George,
I've just emailed my local shop to see if they can source any kind of rack for the bike but as you say i suspect the answer will be no.
the cases are the V35NA's
ideally i'd find a givi rack that would allow me to remove the homemade one and put a top box on as well (my pillion likes a backrest so the box would provide that).

its a nice to have not a need.
