Transmission info needed

OK guys I have a few questions about fj trans.

In 89 yamaha allegedly fixed the problem by better shift forks .

Are any of the gears or dogs undercut on factory produced fj's?
Or is that an aftermarket thing only?

I heard or read somewhere that the 89 and later models had undercut gears.

Gonna dive in and do my trans this winter so I was wondering.

Mark, my '89 didn't have undercut gears as shipped. The '89 forks are allegedly stronger, but they --will-- bend!  If you're going in, do it once & do it right. Do all 3 forks and the undercut gearset. Anything less and you may get to do it over.

Hey Fast By Gast did my last trans undercut. I only had 2nd gear done, because I was on a budget, but it worked great and wasn't too expensive.

Well , I was checking e-bay looking for transmission gears and forks to put in my 86 , when I stumbled upon buried treasure .

I found a gearset and forks already undercut for 100 bucks . :yahoo:

Looks like all the gears were undercut from the pics. I think maybe it came from a legends race car.

I will inspect upon arrival and report if I am still happy or got hose'd .

I'm new in this forum and with FJ1200... I've bought 86' FJ1200 with the 2nd gear issue. Now I'm rebuilding transmission, and I forgot, how many circlips (ref. No.36) should be on the bearing (ref. No.35)?  :dash2:

Welcome new FJowner. Post up in the introduction section so we can know a little bit about you and your FJ and any other things you think are interesting about you and your bike history.

Typically the quantity listed in these kind of parts listings is the quantity required for the total assembly. Item #36 shows a QTY of one, so I am going with 1 circlip is required. However, I have not split my cases or rebuilt any transmissions so my answer should be verified.

I will be using the services of RPM to fix my second gear issue when I can get my frame fixed up and ready for the work.

I was picking Roger Winfield's brain at the recent Phillip Island International challenge.

He builds the Harris FJ1200 F1 bikes that Jeremy McWilliams, Ryan Farquhar, Conor Cummins and another rider were racing.

These bikes are horn ! Using XJ1300 cases and cylinders with the FJ heads, most parts interchange with a bit of fiddling. The rear lower LH engine mount is modified as they used to break off with the engine trying to twist under load. It is bored out right through to the RHS and a sleeve welded in.

This year he has 6 speed boxes fitted and R1 slipper clutches. When questioned about the gearboxes he agreed that they were the weakest point of the engine but in general the engine was much stronger than the XR69 Suzuki replicas he had been using, if no faster (to date).
I thought the gearboxes may have been R1 but they are specially built. He wouldn't say a lot but his business is in gear manufacture and he may have worked with Nova to achieve them. Their only issue all weekend was grabby clutches which slipped when hot. An extra steel plate solved that and the grabbiness was being dialled out by adjusting the slipper clutches.

Jools, I would like to learn more about the 6 speed boxes...seeing as though the FJ and XJ engines share the same case as the transmission, I wonder how that is done.
