Just finished today. I went for a ride and she's purring good.
My experiment with the metalcast ended by completely stripping it off. It turned orange
and stale looking. I spot sprayed more coats here and there through the summer but by fall
those places turned blotchy orange. Some places even yellowish.

Nov. 1st I tore it down again. The firehorn red pearl was OK but I wanted it brighter.
Krylon banner red. The checkering is painted and painfully tedious I might add.

The metalcast is good looking paint and probably would last if it's not subject to
sunlight.

The spartan decals on the tank is Jorge Lorenzo's of Moto GP fame .

I agree with Fred. The new red is much better!  Dave
A pistol is like a parachute, if you need one and don't have one you will never need one again.

Looks far better!
I am a fan of red, however you need some contrast to break up the sheer amount of it that you had on there before.......

Much better!  :good2:

I agree, a black seat would work really well.

While I had the engine on the bench I checked the valve clearance.
It looks like I need 5.

whooee , that is a lot of red. Kinda looks like a diecast toy from the gas station. :bad:

Maybe polish up some aluminum parts to break up the monochromatic look..

Unless you dig it that way , It's your bike. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The FJ should be red and white... You landed it! I'd add a bit more white if it was mine.

I have picked out some racing decals that I haven't bought yet. I'm still deciding which one will go where. That will break up the larger red of the side panel.
I'll be making a chin fairing for it. Get the form plug done and work the glass in the spring. I'm thinking that I'd paint it red with some checkering too.

I polished a lot of aluminum. The things I couldn't get to now, I sprayed some engine clear on. The engine metalcast stripped hard. I engine clear coated front and back, the bottom and top trans. valley. The rest gets polished.

I bought a quart of "Citrus-trip"  after reading a few reviews. It works great! Stripping is a gooey mess no matter, but the Citrus-trip doesn't dry like the toxic stuff. You brush it on like pudding. Leave it for an hour or a whole day then brass wire brush it, wipe off then re apply any that got missed. They say its plastic safe but I did not strip my abs parts. I did strip the windscreen. When the paint was loose, I tried to wash it off with water. That was bad! It turned the whole mess to a hard resin that I had to sand off. I noticed that before when I washed off an aluminum part. Mostly I wiped the goo off and washed with kerosene or paint thinner. That works best. I need to experiment with painted abs because I'd like to strip all my plastic parts.

I was commercial fishing lobster since late June Charley. 14 hours a day. I came home played my banjo, ate supper and went to bed. Nov 1 we started taking up gear and it slacked up. Thanks Charley!

:yahoo: Looks great...reminds me of a cool rally car.

Joe,
Personally, I'm not such a "red" guy, but the more I look at the current incarnation of your bike, the more I like it.

The contrast of the engine to the body, and the checkerboard really sets it off.

_IF_ it were mine, I'd do something different with the seat, though. (Find a checkerboard zebra skin and graft it in down the middle??? Maybe a bit of black edging?)

Granted it is NOT mine, so you're free to do what works for you.

To parrot the others before me: Good Job!   :good:

I put some Nu Finish on all the paint except the wheels. Started it up to push some fuel stabilizer and Sea Foam into the carbs.
The wheels got a little dirt from the ride the other day. I'd like to wash them first before the polymer. I got some cheap chrome
bar end mirrors coming in the mail soon. I'm deciding what to do about turn signals. I bought a pair of small pointy ones to look at.

The seat color is good with me. Black seats get so hot in the summer, I can't go back to that. My old 86 GSXR had a little plastic
piece that slipped over the seat in back. It had a little back rest pad that served no purpose than to fill the void between the seat and the
piece itself. I'm thinking of making that piece up as I make the chin fairing this winter.

I dont have a picture of the bike with the piece on it. Maybe you know what I'm saying. I would do some checkering on that.
I'm still looking at some small decals for the side panels that will brake up the solid color there. Lorenzo's logo is the only
decal I wanted to get under the clear coat.
Thanks for the good words
Joe

I'll be watching this - I've considered doing the same thing. I've got a full lower, and never ride 2-up, so I think a cowl piece would look good. Maybe mock one up out of styrofoam and see how it looks...
