morning all ' iwas pulling my clutchplates out and i came across two steels together with no friction plate between is this normal .it doesnt seem to effect the bike at all . any idea's.? i'm also looking for a headlight rod assy if anyone has one they want to part with. cheer's darren

No, that's not normal.  It might only affect the clutch in high torque situations once you have some wear on the plates.  Then again, maybe some previous "mechanic" tossed that extra steel in to take up slack from a slipping clutch.  How many steels and how many friction plates are in there?

hey arnie hmm i'll have to pull it apart again and have a count up .iv'e bought a new set of friction plate's to put in.  im waiting for the chriisy break to do it cause i need the bike for work at the moment.

arnie i just took a count i have 8 steels and seven friction plates . i just had a look at the clutch diagram from yamaha and it shows friction plate 2, then ring,clutch boss . on mine it's friction plate 2 then steel then ring, clutch boss . thats not right is it?

does anyone know how to remove the wire clip thats holding the friction plate 2 on . behind the wire clip there is a steel and friction plate is this correct?

If you look closely you will see the ends of the wire ring on the inside of the inner basket. Use a set of small needle nose pliers to ease 1 of the ends out through the hole. this will remove the tension from the wire and the second will pull right out. There should only be a friction plate, anti judder spring and the seat for the spring located behind the wire clip.

hey the fan i finally got the wire out with a bit of paitence  . so there shouldnt be a steel behind the wire clip just friction 2. i had a look at the back of the steel  and it has a  wear mark on it from the spring clutch boss i suppoes  so i should remove it ?

Throw that wire snap ring in the garbage; it was required for engine assemble at the factory. I have seen many that have come off of a running engine and get chopped into little pieces. The pieces the get ingested by the oil pump causing major damage to it. ***Throw it away***

I also removed the cushioning spring and base and throw them away also; your choice. The pack from the factory was a narrow clutch disc on the bottom with cushioning spring, then steel & friction staggered all the way out to the pressure plate where the second narrow clutch disc is installed at the pressure plate.

If you throw away the cushioning spring in the bottom of the pack, you can now fit a full size clutch disc in there which then gives you seven regular discs and the one narrow at the pressure plate.

so taking out the cushioning spring and base had no effect on the overall clutch. did this improve your clutch?   or was it still the same.

If you change out the narrow rear disc with the wide one, you will get that much more friction surface area. I believe it does allow the clutch to engage quicker as the "cushioning" spring is designed to cushion the application.

I did what Randy's suggesting to you and it all worked just fine, probably held better with another disc even.

so you removed the spring clutch boss and the plate seat+ the narrow friction plate  and put the wider disc in and it works just fine?
