My '89 FJ1200 just became a "Special Use" vehicle. In Oregon, any vehicle that is 25 years old & older, qualifies for a permanent plate that does not require new registration stickers every year. Other states have similar plates & may be worth looking in to.

Good luck.

Wisconsin you can get a collectors plate after 20. You get the first number assigned to you like 1234. And then your second gets 1234A,third 1234B etc. So if you see one that says 1234Z you know he's got a hell of a collection.

Are there operating/riding restrictions that go along with the Special Use plate?

In Wisconsin you can't ride in the month of January without a special permit. :sarcastic:

The answer is YES. There are some restrictions. I imagine it probably varies from state to state. I'm only supposed to operate the vehicle with Special Use plates in organized events, shows, parades, cruises, etc. I'm not sure how extensive or restrictive it actually is. A lot of Hot-Rod guys apply for these plates so they become exempt from having to pass a smog inspection every two years. It does not seem to be an issue that is heavily enforced. I've talked to a few operators of Special Use plated vehicles & have heard zero stories of being pulled over.

EXACTLY!

Got CLUB PERMIT plates in Victoria australia.  Any 90 days riding. Any state any time for $ 132 a year.  Or $66 for 45 days.  Got to join a club ! That's cheap $60 year and fill in a logbook each time you ride. Had the FJ on CLUB PERMIT reg for a couple of years. Suits me perfect. Full road reg is approx $700 a year here and increasing each year.

Wisconsin I think I paid $70 something for the first one. And for my other 2 bikes $28 apiece. And that's it for life. :good:

And they say we are the lucky country. $28 for life sounds like a great deal.. Wish it was here. However, the older cars are making a huge comeback because of the permit reg.  It's cheaper to have 4 x 25 year old cars than to register 1 new one

Plus, it's a WHOLE LOT MORE FUN!

Whenever I'm out in my MG Midget or VW Camper, people are giving me the thumbs up, taking pictures/movies, chatting me up at gas stations, etc. I can't tell you how many times I've come out of a store to see people taking pictures of the MG in the parking lot, or see someone walking down the street who STOPS and STARES as you drive by.

The FJ attracts less OBVIOUS attention from non-bikers. Amongst the bikers, though... (same deal; mostly conversations)

It's kinda fun to be "anonymously famous".

In Nevada, registering as a classic vehicle  allows you to skip the smog inspection on autos, but you are only allowed to drive 5000 mi. per year. Motorcycles don't require smog checks here, so no gain. Classic plates are an additional $10.00 per year above any regular fees, and can't be personalized, so no real advantage for bikes.

You can get Classic Motorcycle plates here but the motorcycle has to be 30 years or older. So I am out until 2020.. Not much of a gain other than you get a registration for 3 years with the usual classic restrictions. Normal registration here is under 50.00.

Virginia.......one time fee of $50.00 gets you antique plates for life when your bike is 25 or older.  No more state inspections required after that. I went that route in 2014.
