Is this too much metal on the Oil Drain Plug Magnet?

This is my Drain Plug & Magnet after running fresh oil and a new OEM filter during her break-in period of 144 miles, after being in moth balls (not literally) for 19 years. Note the metal particles.  Does anyone think it's excessive considering the circumstances?  I just wanted to use the first filter and oil to help free up the sludge that was probably present after sitting for 19 years.  I wasn't going to run the engine with 19 year old oil to warm it up like one should during an oil change, so the 19 year old oil was drained with a cold engine.  This first oil and filter were sacrificed at 144 miles for the sake of de-sludeging the engine.  A new OEM filter, both o-rings and oil I'm installing today.  I'm going 50/50 10w40 and 20w50, both are Castrol 4T.  Though I plan on switching to AMSOIL, after I run out of the Castrol 4T.

I don't see any chunks of metal so it looks fine to me.

They are really fine, I mean really fine, that's what is causing the distorted bit at the top.  The problem is that they are hard to see because of the oil. Thank god they are nothing like Skymaster experienced.  As soon as I saw the pics he posted I could feel the dread come over me, knowing what was next if he didn't find it first.  I was very sorry for his loss, it would have killed me.

Thanks for the assessment.  I was a little concerned because it was only after 144 miles, usually I would see that much after more than 1000.

I don't think there is a problem. You have to remember, you drained the old oil cold and that whatever was sitting around the engine has been stirred up...hence the deposits on the magnet.

The next oil/filter change I would do at 500 miles...it's cheap insurance...and then go back to specified changes, or as required :good2:

That looks normal from my many oil changes. As already said, no chunks, our engines slowly lose metal from many places and it ends up in the oil. Hence the need for a magnet to help collect it and prevent recirculation. We also have oil filters right??? I do... And the spin-on adapter....
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

That actually looks fairly ok Jo, not bad at all. I'm still running Castrol 4T, does a good job. But oil preferences are just as diverse as someone's taste in beer, it's all good!  :good2:

Thanks for the words Mr. EME (Electro-Magnetic Energy) (X-Ray).  ;)  Yes I know, because others have mentioned it, that the subject of oil can lead, or has been known to lead to passionate debate.  According to a study, bought and paid for by the winner of said study,  :biggrin: AMSOIL is top dog with respect to engine wear reduction. And it could be true. The problem I have with such 'coincidences,' is that one cannot know if in fact the Scientific Method was indeed strictly employed.  Because, at my age, I'm all too aware of one of mankind's sickness's, i.e., the coveting of a glittering prize, their precious.  And they have been known to do absolutely "anything" for it.

But pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, he's no better than any other man, save the fact that he's honest to a fault!  Yes he lives in a silicon based house as well as everyone else, he'll just show you pictures of it, and admit that it's just as fragile as all the rest.

I shall pit the CASTROL 4T against the AMSOIL MCT, by attempting to measure the amount of those Micro Metal Particles, (MMP's) after the same amount of: miles driven, driving conditions and driving intensity. I'll then let you all know what I think I see, being as honest as possible, as a glittering prize is not a motivator for me, rather only truth is; the price of being a philosopher at heart.  :good2:
