G'day,

The riding up here in Ararat is getting pretty cold going to work in the morning and I am finding my gloves are not helping with cold fingers, I found the product below on ebay, but i was wondering if others know of any shop in Australia that would sell these over mittens or mitts.  I am not keen on spending around $500 on BMW gloves, and I will not install heated handgrips....

Cheers, Gareth

BMW gloves aren't that good, heated grips are and Bike Mart in Ringwood has over gloves, over mitts and glove liners.
BTW, why won't you have heated grips?

I've tried them. decent ones. Oxford. They're good for warming the insides of your hands at around town speeds, but that's about it.

Banish cold fingers with these, or similar quality ones. Your hands will thank you.

G'day,

Thanks for the link, I will phone them Thursday to get a price for some over mitts.  I can get some from the U.K for around $35 delivered, so i shall see.
I always swore never to get heated handgrips, an automatic, thermals, regaine for baldness, tracksuit pants, a bike bench or bloody knee pads.  I reckon many things are extra enjoyable if you experience them.

Riding in the rain I like.

Riding when it is 0 degrees I hate.

Cheers, Gareth

Haha, you MUST be younger than me. The irony is, going without a lot of those things (except the regaine) most of my life has now made them mandatory. After decades of hunching over, kneeling on cold concrete I just can't do it any more.
I also like riding in the rain (not short trips though) and the cold but there is a difference between enjoying a short brisk ride and the 4-5 hour cold that starts to creep into your bones. The glow of being warm to start with will only sustain you for a few hours if suitably rugged up.

I've done a few thousand km's over the last 2 weeks in 0 - 7 deg temps, 75% rain and 100% wet roads and loved it but simply could not do it unless I was I warm! and why would want to anyway. I spent years as a young bloke freezing my arse off on trips when the only options were, if it rained you got soaked to the skin, if it was cold, you froze. The wind chill, if it did both, would become a ride stopping event after a while, no longer able to operate the foot or hand controls and unable to even remove your helmet. No thanks, no wish to ever experience any of that again.
I love being exposed to the elements and really do enjoy riding in the rain, but only from inside my warm and dry cocoon.

Aaaah, slipping into the tracky daks when you get home, bliss.

I know what you mean but it's not so bad with decent Winter gloves and the late model FJ's deflect a fair bit of the wind.
I have Oxfords and the RHS grip died last weekend with about 300kms to go. Having had them for 6 years I had forgotten just how bloody cold my hands get without them, and I have just bought new waterproof Winter gloves that are thicker than I like riding with.

I have given passing thought to everything from handlebar mitts to bark busters to get the wind off the back of my hands during the Winter but it's not quite bad enough to actually do anything about it. Most daytime temps here, where you are likely to be riding, are at worst high single digits, not too bad.
Replacement grips are already on the way.

Hello,

You are right Ribbert, too much of the cold becomes not only thrill killing it can also be quite dangerous.  I am not too young though, coming up 41 this year...  I am pretty warm on the bike except my fingers, I have a Rivet jacket which I have treated with scotch guard and leather pants...  I will admit to owning a neck sleeve.

All in all I reckon my winter stuff is pretty good, I don't get wet or cold other than my hands.  When it gets bad I have to stop and put them on the block for around 30 seconds before I can feel them again.

Cheers, Gareth

Gees Doug, I remember that add, and I used to use it when I was a Lad. But then I saw the error in my ways and started to use Californian Poppy.
Now I don't bother 'cause I haven't got any hair, I've grown right out through the top of mine.

Be Good.
