I bought my new rotors off of eBay. I used this seller and had great results.

That Ebay sale is selling solid discs. Any issues with changing from the stock vented discs w/ single puck calipers?

Or if I wish to keep my bike as stock as possible, anyone know of any NS (new surplus) supplies of the original disc?

Fighting a pulsing front brake system and hope I can clean away deposits, but planning just in case...

Any issues with changing from the stock vented discs w/ single puck calipers? No, there will be no  adverse effects by changing the vented rotors to solid rotors. Benefits will be, much lighter weight, better gripping efficiency with Brand New Rotors, and better wear and life expectancy due to better 21st century steel alloy blends.

if I wish to keep my bike as stock as possible, anyone know of any NS (new surplus) supplies of the original disc?  The left front OEM 84'-87' rotor is now obsolete, so there will be very little, if any New Old Stock (NOS) available.

If you are determined to put new vented rotors on. There is a NOS left rotor on eBay at the moment. Buy it now as you may not get another chance at one.

The right front rotors are still available from Yamaha and other distributors. At a MUCH higher price.

IMO, unless you are planning on entering your bike in Classic/Vintage Japanese bike shows where aftermarket is frowned upon. Go with the Solid, slotted rotors

They will work great and you will love them.

If you chose to go this route, rebuild your calipers (clean them well).... They will now need to travel farther to grab the rotor. The muck and grime built up will need to travel past the normal seal position and possibly leak like a torrential down poor... I like my Arashi wave rotors with the Blue dots. It seemed like a few thousand miles to fully bed them into the HH pads. 2 finger braking all the time now....

Good info Thanks;

At 45 bucks I cant pass on that.
Having internal distress on modifying the bike, even though I'm not into the show thing. I really do need to drop those pegs though, getting too old.

The thick (and heavy) vented rotor used on the FJ was also used on the '04-'07 Vmax

Yes they are expensive, but they are available:

The front end/brake/wheel mods for the FJ's are very thoroughly vetted and proven to work well.

A 25 year old FJ with the front end that rivals all but the hard core sports bikes of today.

FZR front wheel, Blue Dots calipers, Arashi wave rotors, Braided brake lines, and RPM fork valves. Missing in the photo is the RPM fork Brace.

In the following photo from this years West Coast Rally. Four of the first 5 FJ's have aftermarket/modified brakes.

Here is a thread on lowered foot pegs. http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=10383.msg100560#msg100560

Another great thread so I am subscribing! I've ended up spending more than I thought I would on this low mileage '86  I bought trying to get it to roadworthy status (according to my anal retentivity), and when I first bought it I bought some forks off of ebay intending to do the upgrade front and rear to 17." But I have 95% tread on the tires, which are stock, and have installed new pads and new dot4 but my rotors are worn. Ugh.....what to do, what to do.....? Great thread!

Don't let "keeping it as stock as possible" get in the way of improving your FJ.  There's tons of stuff that can be done that improves performance and safety that you wouldn't notice unless they were specifically pointed out.

I had that attitude for a number of years.  Once I finally got over it, my FJ got so much better.

I had the opportunity to ride a stock sprung FJ this weekend and it was shocking how crappy it handled.

Any quotes yet? Like $400-$500 for the pair?

As stated above. You can not buy a NEW set of OEM 84'-87' front brake rotors. The left rotors are now obsolete. They are also used on V-Max's up to 2004, they are obsolete for the V-Max also.

Good advice taking it to heart as I have always been a fan of stock but I guess when you consider we are talking about a bike that is nearly 30 years old......no doubt about suspension also, I just removed the stock shock from my 2009 FZ-1 and sent it to racetech to be resprung-what a transformative difference it makes! FWIW and not to thread jack but I'm gonna ride out this set of tires and then convert to the newer forks which I've already bought off e-bay thanks to Randy, and new weels and rotors.
