Trouble getting my FJ to crank... Relay assembly in question

Can someone explain the basic operation of the relay assembly on my 90 fj12?

Here's the schematic - I have been going over this for the last few days and have printed off dozens of these diagrams, and I'm still puzzled.

I see the relay assembly receives the signals from the oil level switch (blk/red), the starter switch (bl/wht),  clutch switch (blk/yel), neutral switch (sky blue), Blue/yellow from the ignitor unit, Green/red from fuel relay, and Red/wht from ignitor and fuel relay.

I need the neutral signal, but am deleting the oil level & clutch switch.

At this point I am getting proper ground signal from the starter switch, but when connected to relay assembly I get nothing when I push the starter switch, but a click from the relay assy when I switch the run/kill switch on...

I apologize for the mangled explanation.  I'm tired...

In fact, how much of this relay assembly do I really need anyway?  Any chance I can wire it away?

Here is the wiring required to make the engine run. This is how our race cars are wired.

You need to add a relay to run lighting systems to the toggle switch and then you are all done.

That helped tremendously, Randy.  Thank you.  I've got most of it figured out now.

(I got my RPM-cherry popped today!  Ordered a set of Uni filters and breather kit.)

HI, new member here. I think this is what i'm after. I cannot see the diagram that Randy posted, but would this allow me to rewire and FJ1200 bypassing the "Relay Assembly"? I have an FJ1200 ABS.

This is more like throwing away the Yamaha harness and wiring it up minimalist " chopper style".  Probably easier and quicker to troubleshoot what you have using a service manual.

Hi
I had trouble with the starter switch on the handle bar so as I'm waiting
for a replacement. I picked up a push button switch thats only on when pushed
ran a wire from B+ on battery to switch then a wire to small wire on relay
that worked fine will crank if relay is good with key on or off but must be on
to run and in neutral always make sure its in neutral before pushing button !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
mounted flush push button on side cover. every thing works as before except for the the push button start.
on relay there are two big red wires one to battery + the other goes to starter small wire has b+ when starter
switch is push on handle bar it energizes the relay to make contact between the battery B+ red wire on relay
and the starter motor wire the other red wire on relay so we are just by passing the stock starter button!
as long as relay, starter and battery are good it will work. I'm using a 10 amp fuse in line from B+ battery line to the push button switch.
always make sure your in neutral before  pushing the button as bike will move if it is not!!!!!
Best Regards MRNORM
