60 second steering head race removal

Ok maybe a slight exaggeration and assuming you already have the steering stem out. Drill 2 small holes, approx 3/16in, through opposite sides of the steering stem where it flares out above the lower race then using a small nail punch or similar you can punch the race out from above. Plug the holes with a small dab of silicon when you're finished and next time it really will be a 60 second job.

They take a pounding in Oz because of the cart tracks they call roads, in Sth Oz a road with an 80kms speed limit requires less maintenance than a road with a 100 limit, so they reduce the speed limit and ignore the pot holes to save money, then blame accidents on excessive speed instead of 3rd rate roads, plus there's the bonus of more revenue through more speeding fines because of the reduced limits.

This very strategy is under consideration for the entire Alpine area where the rally was held this year. They don't have the money to fix the roads and are considering a blanket lowering of speed limits (80kph) as an alternative.
It's hard enough trying to keep anywhere near a 100 on those fantastic roads, 80 would be impossible. If policed, they would make a killing.

They have already done the same thing around the Great Ocean Road and most of the Otways and around some of the hills NE of Melbourne.

For those of you unfamiliar with our great State, get caught exceeding any posted speed limit by 30 kph or more and your vehicle is impounded on the spot (the send a tow truck to pick it up). It costs about a $1000 to retrieve it plus a min $500 speeding fine plus whatever else they charge you with, automatic licence suspension, half your demerit points and if you don't pay they do things like suspend your vehicle registration or drivers licence or won't except the rego renewal when it falls due.

And they expect us drive around deserted country roads in the middle of nowhere at 80 kph.

There was a time when Police exercised roadside discretion in enforcing speeding laws, but that has been taken away as well.

I recently had occasion to call on my auto club roadside assistance and it was going to take half a day for a tow truck to travel to the semi remote location. Fortunately I ended up not needing it but I wonder what a cop would do if impounding your vehicle, sit with you on the side of the road for half a day waiting for the truck then leave you standing on the side of the road in the middle of the bush? Hitchhiking is also illegal here. Maybe he could hide around the corner and book you for that too to make up for his time off the road.

5kph (3mph) over any speed limit can and will see you get booked both by mobile or fixed speed detection devices and 250 will likely see you locked up regardless of the location or conditions.

I rode the FJ interstate last week and as always felt relief when I crossed the border. Not only do they have higher speed limits but far more liberal tolerances and far less speed detection equipment. Discretionary application of the rules still seems to apply as well. They don't view motorists as the enemy and it would appear they are still allowed to smile and be civil when talking to you.

It's a great shame, where I live has some of the best riding in the country.

I routinely get notifications from Home Land Security of Aussie visitors in my area. It really helps with visitor relations as we have time to hide the live stock and our young. However it seems to piss off my Aussie wife when I run the dog off the kennel for a weekend sleep over...
