Hello everyone!

I recently purchased a 1989 FJ1200 and have been reading alot about all the mods you guys have done to your bike. I have a few in mind that are no brainers, spin on oil, would like to redo the forks, but my big question is what are bolt on good to go rims that can swop with the stock set up?

ive read a dozen post  :dash2: and am confused on what rims are interchangeable without any modifications?

also would like to get modernized breaking (steel braided lines etc)..what other mods are recommended?

Thanks for the info =)

Arnie

There are NO rear rims that directly swap with FJ rims without ANY modifications.
That said, there are quite a large number of Suzuki rear rims that swap with very minimal mods, as long as you get the entire wheel assembly including sprocket carrier, brake support and caliper.  Rear wheel assemblies from 4.5 - 5.5 inch width 17 inch dia (GSXRs and some others) fit and work just fine.  You'll have to provide a brake stay mount, and change dogbones or otherwise adjust ride height.
Front, the '88-89 FZR (?) 3.5x17 wheel fits but may be hard to find.

SSteel braided lines are the most important part of a brake upgrade.
You can also change calipers, master cylinders, and pads, but the biggest change is to SS lines.  Your current brake lines are way overdue to be changed anyhow, DO IT.

Blue dots off of like an r6. Side bolt on, not top mount. I think I paid about $40 for the pair delivered. Ask questions before ordering.

Correction to the above, '87-88 FZR1000 or FZR750 will give you a 3.5" wide front rim and it is plug and play.
Do try and get at least a 5" wide rear rim, better yet a 5.5"

Like this, also comes in gold.

Stock FJ rims are odd sizes. Bike should have had 3.5 x 17 front and 5.5 x 17 rear JMO. Lets you run 120 front and 180 rear tire, also getting away from that 16 inch tire with the tall side wall and all that flex. More tire choices and cheaper, with these sizes you can now almost buy a set for what a rear cost. The only tire company making radial rear for the FJ (150/80x16) Avon and for how long who knows. Front 3.0 is too narrow for the 120 this means that you need the 110 and these have a lower weight rating on the ones I looked at. FJ is a big bike and needs a tire designed for the weight of the machine. Hope this helps.

Why?
There's a guy on craigslist selling 89 fzr1000 rims .. I know the front is bolt on but wondering if the rear would require a lot more mods than just mounting the rear brake somewhere ... Wondering if anyone has used the rear off a frz

Pat Conlon

The '89 FZR1000 front rim uses a 17mm axle and is not a "bolt on"

Again, as I posted, The '87-88 FZR1000 or 750 is a "bolt on" it uses the same 15mm axle as your FJ.

Got it?

You do not have to restrict your search for blue dot calipers only to an R6. They are used on virtually all Yamaha street bikes from 1996 to some of the current models. The FZ1, some of the FZ6 models, the older FJR 1300, some of the Star cruisers and several I'm probably forgetting used them. The calipers you are looking for have mounting bolts that point toward the spokes of the wheel, not toward the front of the front tire.
