New Rear Tire

I ordered the Metzler Lazertec rear tire from RevZilla.  $168.  Yea I may of been able to find it for a few bucks cheaper but I have ordered from them before and have been very pleased.

Anyways, I have never changed a rear tire - I've always had a shop do it.  So my question is - do I have a shop do it or can I do it myself? I'd prefer to do it myself if possible. Any locals want to give me a hand?

Thanks,
Todd

I've never mounted one myself (I have cut an old one off the rim myself before having it powder-coated)

If you do end up getting it mounted yourself, do you have a way to balance it?

I always have a shop do it, and I usually end up getting out the door with balancing and a new valve stem for under $25

Recently I got a recommendation for "Woody's Wheels" in Denver..................Said they do a fine job, for little money........I might give them a try soon cause I need a rear tire again.......They do walk-ins, and they don't sell tires there. They won't give you any hard feelings for not buying the tire from them........ :hi:

I'm not familiar with the Metzeler Lasertec tire, but their ME880 is a brute!  Changing it yourself might be easy if the tire is thin and light...much tougher if it's a heavy touring tire.  I have a No-Mar changer and balancer...I I were closer, I'd change it out for the good will generated.

Check this thread if you want to DIY it.

I have changed my tires myself since I only have dealers around here. I had them put on the very first set I needed when I got the FJ. With tire purchase $500.00!!  :dash2:
Never again!!

If you have an independent shop that will do it for $25, I'd go for that. Ride in, x miles, ride home xxxxxxx miles!  :good2:

I like "movenon's" way of mounting tires. Take your wheel off the bike and a local tire shop can break the beads for you. Most of the time for no charge, only takes a minute or two. Then lube the beads and remove the tire from the rim. After you installed the new tire Cyclegear will balance the tire and wheel for free. One suggestion buy a angled valve stem, much nicer to add and check air. Hope this helps.

Thanks all!  I'll take the tire and rim over to Woody's Wheel Works. I didn't even think about them although I have used them to straighten a few of my automobile rims.
