Am I correct in understanding that YZF600 forks are also 41mm and fit into the FJ triple trees with no modifications?

I don't believe that is correct

Yes they are 41mm forks but you have to change out the trees or the YZF wheel will not fit. The YZF has wider spacing if I am not mistaken..

I have an early YZF 600  wheel, either a 1995  or 1996.  It is actually narrower across the brake rotor mounting surfaces and the wheel bearings than the FJ  wheel, by about a quarter of an inch. It also uses a 17mm axle. The later YZF wheels, I have no idea.

I have a few of the 95-96 wheels sitting around for my 94 YZF600.....

On the YZF600 all years use the same triple clamps 95 (4) thru 2007. I think someone, maybe Marsh did the swap using the YZF trees but most use a combination of parts from other bikes and adapt the FJ clip ons to work.

Not that I am home I will do a little research and see what is in the mod files.

Mods discussed here.

On a side note the 95-96 front wheel is not a direct bolt up to the 97-07 forks. Not sure what the differences are as I never had to look into it but I know that it will not bolt directly up.

There was a write up on the FJmods site but I could not get it to come up.

Jon Cain was one of the first to do this mod and I found this quote from him in the mod files

Jon Cain here, I did this mod first back in 1998. You need the 87-88 FZR1000 triple so that the YZF fenders, axle, spacers, wheel, and discs line up. If you use the FJ triple, the FJ fender will not fit and the YZF600r fender wont fit either. Its much easier to find and mod an FZR1000 triple than it is to make all of the custom parts needed to make the FJ triples work.  The FJ triple is 190mm tube CL to tube CL, and the FZR1000 is 200mm, just like the YZF600. The FZR1000 triple is a cheep part on eBay and FJ bearings are correct. The FZR1000 upper triple will need two  changes. The main switch lugs will need to be shortened, so that the steering lock will line up. The switch opening in the upper triple will also need to be bored out a bit too. The stock FJ bars will work on the FZR1000 triples, and all of your stock cables, hoses, and bar switches will work too. If you have any other questions about the mod, or the YZF600r rear wheel mod, sen me a P.M.. I will help all that I can.

Ride Well,
Jon

I have not done the mod for anyone so I an not completely clear on the details. I have revalved, resprung and straightened a few sets for members but never actually installed them.

Jon is on holiday at the IOM and it may be a good idea to PM him in a few weeks when he returns.

I am doing the YZF swap as well. From the best of my info gleaning abilities, I need 87-88 FZR triples to complete the swap. Anyone have a set for sale?

You are correct, and those are hard to come by.

There is some necessary modification to them prior to fitment.

You'll also want spacers between the upper t/c and the clip-ons (these are Jon Cain's):

I made this set myself:

Thanks to the fan for the initial build on my YZF600 forks (since renewed by 35 motorsports)

Full credit to Jon Cain for pioneering this mod and the fan for helping me with the original build... I wouldn't have it without either of them.

Thanks for those pictures. What thickness are the spacers and what is their purpose?

I fitted a yzf600 front end to my 3cv,the forks go in the fj triple trees no problem. You will need to get a new wheel spindle made up & a couple of spacers. And space the brake calipers of the fork legs,I used washers.A lot less hassle than changing triple trees.
