starting issues

well ill get a sync done sometime. and the compression as far as i know is fine but as for adjusting the valves i just got the bike like a month ago so no idea on the maintenance history.
1985 Yamaha FJ1100

ok, it wont hurt to check, it's easy to do while you are waiting. The engine has to be stone cold.

Pull the valve cover off and the ignition cover on the left side.
Put a socket on the ignition rotor bolt and rotate the crank counter clockwise such that the 2 cam lobes you are checking face directly opposite of the shim bucket...the cam lobes point directly away from the bucket.
Get your feeler gauge in there and check the clearances...write them down...do this crank/cam rotation for each set of valves you check.

Report back your measurements...we will go from there.

Take the spark plugs out too. Makes for turning the crank over easier.

May want to want to replace the valve cover gasket and the grommets/seals on the cover's screws. If they are leaking or questionable.

Good points Marty....Although I don't take the plugs completely out, almost all the way out....just loosen them up so the compression escapes.

Shit tends to find its way into open spark plug holes.

A new valve cover gasket and bolt grommets is always a good thing.... :good2:
