I might add a 1997 YZF1000 Thunderace to the garage...can I get some thoughts?

My buddy that has the dwarf(legend type) race car finally took me to his storage to show me the bike he bought from the insurance company thru his brother who owns a tow company.  I did a search on it and it was originally from the states, imported, in 2004 was stolen and later recovered.  The insurance company has label it as "a total loss due to theft and never able to be registered or insured".  It has 2 cracks in the fairing (1each side) and a bent left clip-on.  THATS IT!  Of course it will need a big clean up and carbs done.  I am in the process in finding out if there is any way to get it inspected and re-insured.  The only way I thought was to buy a frame or junker that is still insurable and swap all the parts onto it.....thoughts?  I have found so far that they seem to be rare up here in The great white north.....

I actually nearly bought one, but the condition left much to be desired, sadly.

It's a little on the porky side (but significantly lighter than the ZX9R of the same time), and missing a 6th gear.  Fits proper rubber from stock, and has good brakes.  Power and performance look good, at least on paper, slightly peaky with a surprisingly weak midrange.  Rightside-up forks are good and bad in the usual ways.

Can't tell you much for reliabilty or typical issues (other than I'd assume the usual carb stuff from sitting and age, etc).  Love the shape.

Lots of overlap in use with an FJ, I'd think?  Big relatively comfy sporty machine, big inline four with carbs behind it, etc etc.  A slightly more sporting bent than the FJ, but honestly not far in specifications from a nicely uprated FJ.  You sure you want two machines so similar in the garage?

No, that's foolish talk.  You want at least three.  Of each type of machine for the riding you do... :)  We can dream!

The blokes in the UK would have better input. The TAce was only offered 1 year here in the states.

The TAce was very popular in the EU.

I believe so.  I asked when I was there as well.  He has another kit plane in there too.  Thanks for the tip on exup.

I cheated and looked up the numbers on the tail it's listed as a pa22 colt.
Did you get the yzf, keep us informed
