Running good!

Today is the first day I can say my bikes running good. Drove her for an hour and the only thing I could make better is a little more tuning. :yahoo:



It could be a little smoother. When I let up on the throttle, I get a, hard to describe bumbling- exhaust popping, kind of rough.
What would that be attributed to?

My first guess if you were at full throttle your main jets might be to rich ?  Someone with more "full throttle" experience might chip in.  I think if you let off the throttle and it surged or gained in RPM then it would be to lean.

Did you have a problem syncing your carbs ? If so did you get that sorted out ? That could also be a problem.

I also got out today and did some higher speed testing. Did 120 mph for about 2 miles and some full throttle short bursts with no problems. I am at 3000 feet with 112.5 mains, needle at the 4th notch down, UniPods and free flowing mufflers.

George, I'm just talking about normal driving. Say for instance, if I'm driving 45 mph in 5 th and I close the throttle, it bumbles as it slows down.
It's kinda rough, like small backfires. It doesn't matter what gear or speed.
I've been thinking about it. When I let off the throttle, the carbs drop to the idle mixture. If one or two carbs are open more than the others, The engine would burn that fuel and make the popping. So my carbs are still not sync'd right?

Hey Ken, I don't know which is louder the color or the exhaust. It's like a loud candy apple :biggrin:

I'm sure, if i were to look closely, i could spot that red reflection from the atmosphere just above the horizon  :rofl2: :rofl2:

I just love that color..  :good2: makes me wanna repaint my bike :-)

I was always under the impression backfires were the result of a leaking exhaust system, sucking air in somewhere and mixing with the hot gases. One way to test would be to block the exhausts somehow to see if you can hear it hissing anywhere, by rights if there's no leaks anywhere the engine should stall. We used to test our old cars exhausts that way so a bike should be the same.

Well its a good idea to sync the carbs and get the fuel air close before doing anything else.  If you cruising at about any speed you are probably under 1/4 throttle ?  Wouldn't hurt just to see what your valve clearances are while you got the tank off to sync the carbs.. Of course before you warm it up :).
