The turn signals stopped working shortly after I took ownership.
My Bike shop has not been able to isolate the problem and give me a cost estimate.  He says it could be the $150 Flasher Relay assembly Yamaha Part No. 2UJ-81950-00-00
http://www.2wheelpros.com/oem-parts/yamaha-flasher-relay-assy-2uj-83350-00-00-part.html

The turn signals were originally self canceling function.  I have not found info on how that works.  Does anyone have insight into that?

The shop says he can NOT definitely pin the problem down to the say  Flasher Relay assembly part because "Yamaha does not publish the required values." and the shop manual says "if the flasher is not working , replace  Flasher Relay assembly part."
The shop does not want to install a simple turn signal flasher relay.  "This bike is complicated and 25 years old, so..."

I bet someone else has dealt with a similar issue.  Did you find a solution.?
Does anyone have the expected voltages, etc from a working unit.
Does anyone have tips on troubleshooting turn signals for and 1989 FJ1200 California model. (no ABS)
Does anyone know of a less expensive unit to substitute that will still give me turn signals.

Thanks in advance.  Cafe Nervosa

Go read Keand3's thread "Well" in the FJ projects thread.  He had some problems with the flasher too.

I could be wrong (I thought it happened once, but I was uh, wrong) but I thought the self cancelling turn signals stopped after '87?

My 86' has self canceling turn indicators as well as self activating turn indicators. I know this because I will riding along, enjoying the speed and zipping past cars, when a flashing light on the dash catches my eye. WTF??? My turn indicator is on! It seems to do this without any pattern other than it seems to be the Left indicator. It is a minor issue for me, it keeps me on my toes and alert for other unexpected events.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Sorry, your memory is incorrect. My '89 & my Dad's '90 both have/had self canceling turn signals.

As arnie said, i have written some about the same issues as you describe.
The easiest and quickest way is to add another relay for the turnsignals and run everything els as is on the old flasher relay.
Wiring the new relay is fairly easy and there's alot of YouTube videos covering the topic.

The reason for why i say this is the easiest way is because every safty  features is routed through the flasher relay.. Not the smartest solution of you ask me. Removing the unit will result in loss of safty features and requires some extra wiring to bypass or remove the features completely.

Thanks for the correction Ed.  I was under then impression that function went away when the fuel pump showed up.  I guess Yamaha gave it up for the rubber mounted engine.  :-)

FYI, I can get you than flasher by the part number you have listed here for $84.71

Let me know if I can be of assistance.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I will look them up for myself and then learn what the shop has to say.

Ken,
I read the posts from a couple months ago and read the service manual, but I still don't know how to do this fix of a new relay as suggest.  I was unable to find Youtubes on this topic.
My mechanic thinks it will require a new Flasher Relay assembly Yamaha Part No. 2UJ-81950-00-00.  He has a guy with a FJ visiting his shop and he may try to swap parts in an attempt to locate/isolate the fault.  It might be bad karma, but I am not hopeful at this point that he finds the fault or a solution.
Do you have more info that you can share?

Hi.
If i understood you correctly you are to install a oen flasher relay?
Yes you could install the oem flasher relay and it will be okay and work properly again. The only drawback with oem flasher is the price.

With adding a new modern flasher relay you will need to identify which cables on the old flasher relay  that is you turnsignal connect them and the controll wire from the handlebar. If your unfamiliar with wiring i would recommend yout mechanic to do this or just  go with the oem flasher.

The problem is that the mechanic will not promise that a new oen flasher relay will solve the problem and he is reluctant to install a modified version "on a complicated 25-year old bike" , so...
I am willing to try the "adding a new modern flasher relay".  I can decipher schematic drawings and use a multimeter.  You tube videos of similar projects would be helpful because I have never played with the wires and connectors on a motorcycle before.

Cafe Nervosa,

These are old bikes, and that flasher unit has lots of things going on, in there.  If I had that problem, I would just buy a new flasher, with one of two results: the problem would be fixed, or I would have a spare good flasher in case the factory quits making the new ones, someday.

I bought a good used flasher unit cheap from eBay (distasteful as that may be for me) just to have a good spare.  I also bought a good but cheap handlebar switch there (and checked that it was good by plugging it into my bike, just swapping plugs and leaving my own switch in place).  Now if the turn signals ever fail, I can easily check if it is the flasher, or the handlebar switch that causes the problem.  If you buy a multimeter, get one with a beeper and lead-clips.  That setup will make tracing wires much easier.

Cheers,

Cafe Nervosa,

If you get a hold of a good OEM flasher unite, go for it. It's the easiest way to solve your issue from what i can see from this thread. If you search eBay for that partnumber there will be several hits that's worth a look.
That said, if you would like to add a new flasher relay to work side by side the old flasher relay (you'll need the old one for the safty features), then I can see if i can get a drawing of the schismatics and send you. I am currently working insanely hours, so i don't know when i will be able to get it done. (I'm hardly at home you see) Others might chip in on the wiring in the mean time I hope

In the meantime, here's some video's that might get you started. I

Before you go to all that trouble...

I'd think there would be a SoCal FJer who'd be willing to try your flasher unit in their bike to see if it works or not.   :pardon:
