A couple of specific FJ questions - need your ideas! (anti-spam)

So, I have this new anti spam thing on the forum now.  It gives me the ability to write questions that people have to answer to register for this forum.  Not only does this completely solve the spam-bot automated crap - by asking specific FJ questions it should solve the human spammer element as well (unless they have an FJ of course).

This is the question I have in there now:
What company made the FJ (lowercase letters - like honda):
Answer: yamaha

Ok, so that is easy.  This is another question I was thinking of asking:
What RPM does the FJ tach Redline at (number like 5500):
Answer: 9500

Now I just checked the 89 FJ and 92 FJ in my garage (the 86 is a streetfighter and doesn't have the instrument cluster) and they were both 9500.  Is this true for ALL years of FJ?  Even the 84-85 and 86-87?  Is this true for foreign models as well?

Also, please let me know some suggestions of FJ specific questions you think would be good to ask.  The idea is to make them easy enough for a NEW FJ owner to answer – while not so obvious for a spammer to answer.  Also – I think we get members join here who have NOT YET bought an FJ, but are looking for one.  They can't go to their garage and look at the tach to see the redline.  So this is a bit tricky.  I'm open to suggestions and ideas!

Marsh,
My '85 redlines at 9500 also.  I'm pretty sure they all do (at least the stock ones).

For another question, how about: "What is the airspeed velocity of a laden Sparrow?"  I always liked that one.  Plus, we'll know if they have a sense of humor.  Which is required with this group.

What do you mean? African or European swallow?

So you're looking for a question that would indicate at least a general interest in FJs but not require ownership or in-depth knowledge?

How about, "How many cylinders does an FJ have?"
"If you wanna bark with the big dogs, you can't pee with the puppies!"

Marsh,
You can't try to block out a human spammer because new members may not know much about the FJ, but their friend has one or something and would like to be part of the site.
I don't know if you can do scripting for the answer, but to help with automatic registrars this is the questions I would suggest:

What company made the FJ and tomorrow's date: (Expected Format: Honda 01/01/09)
Answer: Yamaha 10/23/09

Now the answer is rotating and will be significantly more challenging to bypass automatically because the answer is not consistently the same.
I would also allow the answer in upper, lower or mixed case and make the space optional since it will not make a difference now that you added a rotating date.
To really throw off the automatic registrars, in four months you can change the questions to ask for today's date, and then in four more months, maybe yesterdays date, then start over again.

I'd not ask specific things that require an owner to know.  For example, Hi, I'm jack's seething desire for an FJ, I'm here to learn more about them.  I wouldn't know what the redline is, becuase I haven't bought one yet, or I bought a wadded basket case and don't have a tach yet.

A simple question to put that blocks spam by half is to ask "are you a human, Y/N"

Sounds stupid, but it works.

Does the FJ have an automatic transmission?
Is the FJ a capable airplane?
Are the wheels made from Diamond or Aluminum?

The questions should almost be ridiculously easy, so that even a poor guy who doesn't know much about the FJ would have the ability to answer them.  You could even put a note that refers the person signing up to a readme in the introduction section of the forum, and have instructions there for them to put in a word highlighted on that post ("typewriter").  Further, then we could put a bunch of useful links and "here's where to start" type information within that posting:

Welcome to the FJowners.com forum, dedicated to the 84-85 FJ1100 and the 86-92 FJ1200 (but not the crappy 87's!  :empathy3: ) Here's instructions on how to register, blah blah blah, when asked, put in the word "typewriter" without quotes in the space provided.  Here's where to look for a FAQ on basic info about blah blah blah

And so on.  My two cents (currently $46 with inflation).

I already have the automated spam-bot thing covered like I said.  I forgot to mention that I also have this question in there too:

Type fj1100 in the field to the right:
Answer: fj1100

I was just looking for specific FJ type questions.  I like threejagsteve's question about the number of cylinders - I had already thought about a similar question like how many sparkplugs does an FJ have.

andyb

I just don't want them to be specific enough that someone coming to look for information wouldn't be able to register because they don't know what they're coming here to know, ya?

I particularly like the idea of forcing people to read a welcome/faq though.  It's unweildy but would cut the spambots to just shy of zero.

One question might be:

1. how dials does the FJ have in its instrument cluster? or what was the first year the FJ was made.

The first question maybe an "owner" type question but the second is something that I think is well know or can easily be found.

Marsh,

My favorite types of question include:

How many beans make five?
Answer: 5

In which month does Hot August nights rally take place?
Answer: August

etc etc

Errr....that was "African or European"

Or were you going off on a new tangent? If so then kindly disregard and continue as before.  :bye2:

All I can say is I sure am glad I'm already signed up cos' I'd be clueless about some of this. Tach- redline- heck fire I'm not looking down at the instruments when the "kookuloo" moment hits me!
