Yes there is a difference. Basically all diff, side covers are the only thing that swaps over w/o swapping everything over.

Yep, as Bob said, the side covers, seat and front fender are the same. I don't know about the color on the '88 we don't have them here in the states.

The rear cowl is different, the main fairing is different (integrated turn signals on '88) the chin fairing different.

Weight wise, the 84/85 are the lightest FJs made. Aerodynamically the 84/85 are sleeker, with a lower coefficient of drag.

But that wasn't your question.

Cosmetically the differences between the 84/85 and the '88 is that the 84/85 just flat out look better than the later FJs. Especially the primo silver and red USA edition '84.

On the 86 the mirrors mount to the fairing and the front turn signals are built in.  Screens and air scoops are different also.  I'm partial to the 86 myself.

86' rules.... They don't have a Pink stripe....  :bomb:
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

The 84,85,86 FJ's are absolutely beautiful as red/silver and red/white look fantastic on the bike and are some of my personal favorites!  However, I seem to get the most compliments on my 89 FJ that is midnight blue.  It has a Givi rack with color matched E360 painted luggage to match and is quite attractive and eye catching.  I do like the 89 white/gray as well, which some have called "theft deterrent" colors on this website.  My least favorite was my 92 FJ as the blue paint had metallic purple added to the color and was most noticeable in direct sunlight.   I guess it all comes down to personal preference.
