Flasher Relay

I figured I start a new thread regarding the flasher relay unit on the FJ.
In another thread (this one http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=10798.msg108393#new) i mention the issue regarding LED's and the relay.
I have tried to find a "writ-up" or similar for this flasher relay conversion on the FJ but non found as of yet.

I need to understand the relay and it's wiring better, before I start/attempt to make a conversion since some features will be lost, and or bypassed.

  • From what i have read and seen on the wiringdiagram the starting circuit cut-off relay is incorporated through the flasher realy. Meaning when it is unplugged the bike won't start.
Question: How do I keep this circut feed through a new relay? Does it need to be?
  • The speedo read cable is for the self-cancelling unit for calculating time and distance.
Question: This could probably be discared without any effect..?
  • I did read somewere that the the Flasher relay also controls the safety switches.
Question: Would this safty switch be the sidestand safty feature? Cause the diagram seems ti incorporate the clutch switch.
  • From looking at the wirediagram in both Haynes and Owners manual, it seems like each turnsignal has its own wire to the relay.
Question: Would all this wires be connected to the same pin or one for each side on the new relay?

Have been trying to learn more on how a relay works by browsing the web and YouTube. Learned some but it didn't awnser my questions.  :wacko3:

Please feel free to enlighten me with all your knowledge on the subject  :good2: In the mean time I'll go and wash my white rims  :rofl2:

Cheers

All I know is that I'm using a 1TX wiring loom and ignition system on my XJR and the only black box connected is the TCI unit.
No indicators fitted. Even the clocks have been junked, so no reed switch there. No clutch switch fitted. 3CV carbs gravity fed, so no pump.
Probably not really what you want to know.

Well, yes. If i understand correctly you have all your safty switches either disabled or rerouted around the flasher. The start relay circut i guess could be routed to have power constant when Kelis turned on.

That would mean no more side stand, neutral safty features,  right?
But how would one reroute the power feed to starter circut?

All safety switches got rid of, no re-routing around the flasher, it's not there.
The starter relay or solenoid is still in place as it should be.
No neutral light, I just "feel" the gearbox as I'm using an aftermarket mini tacho, no rev counter and no side stand switch.
You've got indicators on the ends of your arms haven't you?  :sarcastic:

Are you missing the neutral light because you removed the flasher relay? I wouldn't want to loose my neutral light...  :scratch_one-s_head:

I would be comfortable with loosing the clutch and side stand safety feature, but i want to keep my lights!

Yes, luckily i got long arms....

On the newer FJ's the Relays have been split.. one flasher relay and one regular relay.
Anyone who knows what the relay controls? Shown here as nr. 3
it hit me, if Yamaha "splited" the old flasher relay into two relays, I'll bet the second relay is the one containing the safety features? Do you see were I'm heading at, or is it a bad idea?

No. Because I removed the whole speedo, rev counter and fuel gauge assembly.

keand3

Ahh I see. That figures...  :dash2:  :rofl2: :rofl2:

My son has a 79 harley electriglide and he want his turn signals on all the time, then when he uses them they will flash off and on.
We've come up with a solution that my be usefull to you.

This utube video explains how a 5 pin relay will run a light and then flash off.
How to use running light as a turn signal

This is a 5 pin relay for sale. He actually bought 2 off ebay instead last night.

I figure that I will use the intermittent signal coming off the flasher = The guy in the video, touching the 2 wires together.

The bike is apart right now but it wont be long before were working in that.

He bought 2 aftermarket mirrors with LED lights built in and those are the intended lights that will stay ON and flash OFF

This may help or .... :bomb:

Thanks for the tip, but it wasn't really what I was looking for. I'm afraid. :pardon:
Here in Norway driving with the turnsignals on all the time is forbidden by law  :dash2:

It looks like safety features has to go if I am gonna have a new relay correctly wired..
I am still waiting for reply from people whom might have some good insight to this, so well see.

Anyone know who manufactured this OEM flasher relay? They should have a diagram of the relay?

Nippon Denso manufactured the OEM for Europe.

Do you need any to take apart?   I've got a few going spare that I'll never use again.

Yes,  taking one apart would definitely help me a lot understanding this flasher relay. Why they have made it so complex, ill never know i'll guess. PM sent.

Will contact nippon denso to,  and see if they have any good suggestions.
