Hi There,
Rear wheel from a 87-88 yamaha fzr1000 road bike 18 x 4.50
Will this be a straight fit or will i need to mod anything, ?? it's on Trademe :yahoo:

Bones

Not sure if it would fit or not, but 17inch not 18inch rims are the way to go. Bigger tyre selection. GSX rim is a popular choice.

Too young to be old but old enough to know better.

Have just done the FZR rear wheel swap my self, but i went for 17" rim.

For the 17" to be i direct fit (almost, will explain later) it net to be from a 89+ modell.. Not sure for the year modell of the 18" need but if remember correctly 18" from 87-88 is bolt on..

QuoteThe easiest way to replace the old fashion FJ 16" wheel is to fit the FZR1000 Genesis wheel. Please note this is a 18" and not a 17" as with the ExUp model. It uses the FJ rear disc, axle and sprocket carrier.

No matter if its 17 or 18" you need to get inner sprocket carrier rear brake torque arm machined to be able to get the wheel to fit.
Doc over at the FJ Club in UK sells the pre-machined: http://www.fjcatalogue.com/catalog/item/7303420/8542688.htm

Quite a bit of machining ....... there is a writeup about it on the UK FJ site somewhere (can't find it at the moment). I did it and ran it that way for 1 tyre, then did the complete FZ1 swingarm mod cf 17" wheel.......would not go back.

FJZ1 1200 - It'll do me just fine.
Timing has much to do with the success of a rain dance.

Do not consider a rear rim swap unless you can get *at least* a 5" wide rim out of the deal.

Stay with 17" rims, your selection of tires will be much better.

Why are you saying a 5" wide rim is a minimum?
The choice of 160 or 170  17" tires is quite broad and certainly adequate for the power thel FJ puts out.  Handling is, if anything, a bit more nimble with the slightly smaller rubber.

Pat Conlon

Why?  Simple, a 5" wide rim is the proper width for a 170/60-17 tire.

If you are considering smaller than a 170, you might as well stay with the oem 150/80 donut.

If you are going to do it...do it right. The 5" wide (yzf600) and 5.5" wide rims are out there, readily available.

Pat,

You have a pretty good technical background, and with a FJ14 like you have, maybe the extra width could help keep from melting your tire.

The change from the OEM 150/80 on a 3.5 x 16" rim to a wider tire on a wider wheel on a 17" rim is not primarily to increase the width of tire but to get a shorter, stiffer sidewall.  This gives you "right now" handling and reduces or eliminates the wallow caused by tire sidewall flex felt most often in long sweepers.
The main benefit to going to a 5 or 5.5" wide rim and 180 wide tire is style.

I'm running the yzf600 rear wheel with a 160.  What size tire should I be using?

Spot on Arnie.
Shorter side walls cause the tire to be more stable and the bike benefits by the (slightly) larger contact patch, or footprint of the tire.
Shorter sidewalls need wider rims to maintain the proper tire profile when under load.
Hooligan, my first experience with the rear rim mod was with the 5" wide yzf600 rim and it worked just fine.
You can run a narrower tire like a 160 on the 5" rim just fine. Next time you need new rubber try the 170 tire and see what you think.
Problems come up with pinching a larger tire on a narrower rim. Like a 170 tire on a 4.5" rim.
The last I checked, the 170/60-17 tire was almost the same exact diameter of the oem 150/80-16 tire.

Of course the selection of tires for 17" rims is far larger than the offerings in the 18" sizes.

As Pat says, you can run the 160 on the YZF600 rim okay, which is what I did when I first made the conversion.  However, I found that if you ride aggressively enough, you can ride right off the edge of it, which I did a couple of times.  I went to the 170, and it's no longer a problem.  The Shinko Raven and Verge rears that I've run are indeed only slightly smaller in diameter than the 150/80.  But since I went to 18/40 gearing and shortened the dogbones until the rear tire is 1/4" off the deck on the center stand, that's no problem either.

Thanks for all the feedback, it appears I should hold out for a 17in, thanks again :dance2:

Actually a 170/60 is a goofyshit size itself.  The 160 gives you wider variety available, though not many folks will really need race wets on their streetbike  :music:

I fundamentally agree with Pat though, if you're going to bother doing a rim swap, go for the best.  17x5 or 17x5.5 is really what the FJ should have had all along, and gives you a huge selection of tires, with even the worst ones being better than stock.

:pardon:  Okay, I'll take that bait... exactly what, in your opinion, qualifies the 170/60/17 as a 'goofyshit' (whateverthefuckthatmeans) size?  Sure seems to a readily available size from all the major manufacturers...

A 160 or a 180 is available in more styles than a 170.  The 170 was nothing like as popular as a stock size.  There's enough selection in the 170 for the vast majority of riders.

That's all.
