Hey, you play drums right? I got interested and picked up a kit (Tama) and am learning slowly, but... er well slowly. Been looking at videos of the greats like Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Hal Blaine. These guys were something else, but I'm just in it to get a solid set of basics a few fills and look to hang out with a band for fun. I'm hitting the rudiments, but I find them boring after a while. Trying to collect a few grooves that are alternative to my fairly good standard rock 2,4.

Hey Andy....that sounds great....you named the best...Neil Peart actually took some more lessons from Gene Krupa a few years ago....trying to embrace the Balletic motion of drumming...the dance of drumming per ce.
And what more can be said about Buddy Rich.....he is and always will be the King !!!
I never took drum lessons.....but I fell in love with them when I was a little boy (7).....my cousin, Peter John, had a set of Ludwigs and when I saw and heard him play......I was hooked !!! I began to hit everything with my hands....especially the top of my desk at school.......my brother picked up the guitar and there were enough drummers around our neighborhood......and being a pretty boy...my brother would push me in front of the mic.....but whenever I had the chance I would sneak behind the drums and play. I loved music...still do.....and whenever I would listen to a song.... I always focused on the drums....and that is how I learned....just listening and trying to figure out what the heck he was doing.........then I would throw on some songs with easy drumming and just played along.....in the beginning, I would play along to Alice Cooper.....Led Zepplin......and over the years of digesting different songs and different drummers, I eventually got to be able to play along with some pretty incredible drummers.
My go to exercise is back and forth with the high hat and bass drum...and just spend 20 minutes on paradiddles...up and down he set......foot work is key and snare rolls. It is a lot like driving a standard...push in the clutch, release the gas, shift the stick and steer the wheel....at first it is tricky....but after time, you're ready for the race track. Pm me if ever I can be of any assistance.
Kev

PS....I have been thinking about starting a thread in the Video section.....and calling it CanD's Corner. There people will be able to post video of their passion for music....any instrument...any song....would that interest anyone else besides me?

I was thinking ....might be better to start off learning some technical stuff first before learning to twirl the sticks........or arms in this case......the kiddies may like that style.....but personally, I think the guy looks like an idiot.... :nea:

....here...have a list to Neil

Funny, I had remarked to myself that Neil Peart was also 'one of the greats' when the original post was put up there, and now, there he is....

Peart also writes a damn good motorcycle travel experiences book (in fact, several of them).

I was never a big Rush fan, but he's a hell of a drummer!

I think I read that he rode/ (rides?) his bike to almost all of the Rush concerts.

Thought that was cool.

Yep all those guys, I play nothing like them of course. That's just years and years and years of dedication. Much as I like listening to music, actually producing it is a hard won  joy at the moment. I'm finding it more of a chore than a pleasure, but you never know, perseverance might get it (but at what cost). Don't be expecting any greatness between here and the next WCR.

I think CanD corner is a top idea. Wonder how many Fjers can play something? That could be the fjers winter challenge. Those in the colder parts have plenty of months to pick up an instrument and give it a go. Us poor Californians don't really have a down season so pity us and our low playing practice times, coz we're out on the bikes most likely. Oh hum thems the breaks

After the death of his daughter and then a year later his wife died.....the guy just got on his bike and rode.....for a year I think......I guess like the rest of us...he needed to get away and work things out.......

Haven't seen anything from him lately, but he rides to all the concert cities rain or shine (BMW GS).  Spends his free time studying maps and planning back routes to the venues.

The rest of the band takes care of all the logistics and lets Neil do all the riding he wants.  He is usually accompanied by a local friend (or road crew member) on all his rides.  I've only read Far and Away, but it was a very good read.  I knew nothing about him prior to the book, but he's got a huge chunk of respect from me after reading what he's been through (both on the bike and in personal life).

Brian Catterson (ex-Motorcyclist editor) accompanied Peart on several rides and several chapters of Far and Away appeared in the mag while he was composing it.

Neil Peary has got to be mentioned as one of the top percussionists of all time. Just the size and complexity of his kits is amazing however, John Bonham still gives me goosebumps listening to his thunder. His kid ain't half bad either

One drummer that I don't think too many have ever heard of was Jon Hiseman of " Colosseum ".....I stumbled on this solo he did in 1970 when I checking out my fav band "Jethro Tull" and was blown away...check out this drum solo.....remember 1970.....pretty amazing...... the solo starts at 22:44 and ends at 25:00.......blew me away

You would know Kevin of the late great Jeff Porcaro, from my favourite group Toto. He had feeling and technique on the drums that simply blows me away. I've watched his you-tube training vids and they are fantastic.

Funny thing is I've been playing bass for around 4 years now, absolutely love it. My neighbours across the road had a pub band in Brisbane in the late 80s, and every Thursday night we get together in their music room to play, I'm getting better but my fingers are still a bit slow. You should visit on your trip Downunder and play with us one night!
