No worries, I'll light the heater .. its usually the exhaust valves that go , I've got a couple of pics here of  burned out valves, the shims had never been adjusted by any of the previous 2 owners , then I rode 1000ks a week to work for 7 years and finally broke her , damage was done  :dash2:   ,,, at least yours is in excellent hands mate , rpm is extremly fast with parts so if your waiting on him it won't be long
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

Hello Tom,

Reading your post was like a trip down memory lane!  last year I dropped the engine out of the FJ1100 '85 with around 150,000kms I think for a fix as I had no compression in no.2 cylinder.  when the mechanic got the head off he told me a large part of the exhaust valve had broken off and welded itself to the piston crown.  He was able to easily chip off the piece and reuse the piston, but the engine got new exhause valves etc.

I have sent the mechanic an email hoping he took a picture with his phone, I will post it if he did.  A question I have is what fuel do you run?  I have always used 95 in bikes and cars, seems a good balance between cost and pinking.

Would fuel octane choice effect combustion chamber temps to a large enough degree to burn a valve?

cheers, Gareth

p.s if you use powerplus in the states for parts be prepared for a very long wait, but they have cheaper OEM than local.
