Let me just get it out of the way: I'm sorry but I was too anxious to get this done so I didn't take any pictures  :dash1:

Anyway, for those that want a good, bright LED tail light without forking out a ton of cash, this one works very well: http://www.ebay.com/itm/120998174401?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I took the trailer light apart and discarded its red lens, then took the FJ tail light apart. After removing the bulbs, I cut a larger opening in the back of the reflector for the LED plug to fit thru, then soldered the factory harness to the LED's connector. To put it all back together, all I did was use my butane soldering iron to do a little plastic welding, melting the LED's reflector to its housing, then the LED's housing to the FJ's reflector. Put it all back together with a little 3M Window Weld on the FJ lens it's all set (oh, and I used a strip of 6 super white SMD LED's, mounted inside the FJ's housing as my license plate light). The whole project took about 45 minutes, so it's quite simple. I will take some pictures later and add them to my gallery so everyone can see what the light looks like.

Kudos Paul.

Do you get any light down on your license plate?  I didn't.

I used a license plate frame with the LEDs built in...

Cheers

Good mod Paul. Did about the same thing. Trimmed up the rear end.

I think I got the led plate lights from Auto Zone. I think Pat has a real good looking frame with built in light on his FJ. Or you could just tell the officer "thats what headlights are for".... :rofl2: :rofl2: :bye2:

Thanks George. I did some trimming of my own the weekend before and really like the look of the tail now. I've added some daytime pics of the tail light to my gallery. Once it gets dark I'll take some nighttime pics and add those as well.

Hi Pat. Yes, I think there is a sufficient amount of light hitting the plate. I had previously purchased a roll of super white SMD LED's, the kind you can cut every third LED (all you have to do is solder your own wiring then). So I cut a strip of six and mounted them inside the FJ's lens to the bottom of the reflector. I'll add a pic of that to my gallery once it's dark out.

TNX Pat. I followed your leed on that mod !

Repairs are coming along. Slow but it is getting done. Making a few improvements / cleaning / inspections / replace a few parts and polishing of course. Got the fairing mounted and just put in a new upper head bearing today. Got a few other projects sucking my wallet down so its slow but steady process. I have all the hard to locate parts in hand except one and it will be shipped any day.

Mostly healed and certainly not complaining. :good2:.  Looking forward to the 30 year FJ anniversary rally or rallies next year. Glad that everyone else made it through the summer and still vertical when they are supposed to be.  :good2:

I added a couple more pics to the gallery. The brake light is so bright my camera had a hard time getting a good picture, and I see that my LED strip isn't mounted quite far enough back to fully hit the plate and light it up nicely. However I think it will be okay (guess I'll find out if I ever get pulled over!).
