Hi
I just talked to bike shop owner who happened to have 1100 engine on a bench no brand affiliation at this shop a real bike shop here in Hamilton Ont.His end advice to me is find a late good 1200 engine and pointed to the two bolts that hold on the 11's alternator and said if they ain't busted yet just wait for it and of course the second gear problem would be a thing of the past too.Anyone here beg to differ on these points and why?
Thanks Chiz

So, replace the bolts before they break...

That is what I do on customer bikes.

2nd gear can be an issue in the early 1200's too.

I am not sure if that answers your question/comment.

The two bolt alternator is a major pain in the ass, and it doesn't matter if you change the bolt or not if you ride it hard it will break the top one.

I have done it 3 times in the last 5 years.   The fix is to get a 3 bolt alternator and have a tab welded (and threaded) onto the case for the 3rd bolt.

Second gear can round off on neary any bike trans.  Some are a bit more prone to it than others, but lazy shifting will eventually do it to anything, so as the miles rack up it's to be expected.

Actually it is the bottom one that breaks.  I may not have noticed it at all but it started leaking oil, which ran down the pickup coil wires into the cover. Making it look like a crank seal leak.

after a couple of times it has worn the case so the mating surface is no longer flat.  :dash2:
