studs leaking

As some of you may know....CanD (my 85) was sent out to have the bottom end done(quite some time ago) by the most reputable guy in Canada.... an older guy with a reputation as good as it gets. Anyway.......he ported and polished the engine along with a list a mile long of other stuff he did as well.......well once the engine was done, I sent the bike to another shop to install the motor as well as the new carbs and tune it.......after finally resolving the few issues with the new carbs, he fired her up only to find 2 studs on the right side leaking  :dash2: :dash1: :dash2: :mad: :flag_of_truce:  :dash2: :dash2: :dash2: :dash2: :dash2: ...... I probably need to take the motor back to the guy....but I also need a word of encouragement.....so bummed.... :cray:.......just seem to be hitting one road block after another.........chasing the wind....the wild geese as well as my tail.....and I'm feeling so bummed out.... :diablo:.... I don't need any sunshine blown up the ole tail pipe but if someone can tell me what might be the reason and what might be involved in resolving this leak.....I am hoping to ride her this year before the season ends :empathy3: Thx

   G'day Kev, if you're talking about an oil leak, there are two rubber oil seals that fit between the head and the block , two outer most studs. (RHS) These may have been left out when re-assembling.

Kev, it may not be so bad....if you are talking about the cylinder studs where the nuts go to tighten down the head, there are copper crush washers that go under the nuts. Those 2 oil passages supply oil to your cams.
Steel washers won't seal. You need soft copper washers that will deform when you tighten down the head nuts to 25 ft/lbs.

If that's the area, your fix is easy peesey.

Is it leaking at the nuts or between the fins at the gasket surface?

If at the nuts, you need the washers Pat posted. If between the fins the head needs to be removed and the dowel seals installed.

When I do major maintenance or have a parts related question. I mostly refer to Partzilla.com for part location and assembly. I don't usually order parts from them, but it is a great site as a reference tool.

#13 and #14 are the stud washers.

It is really helpful when buying used parts. If you click directly on the part number. You will be shown a page that lists every model that the part is used on.

Here is an example: I clicked on the #14 part number and got the following page. http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/yamaha/YP-90201-10128-00.html If you scroll done, you will see that the copper washer is still used in models up to the currently produced Yamaha/Star Bolt v-twin.
