fork oil level?

Ok this might be a simple question to some...but when checking the fork level...is the fork checked with it being held straight up or angled as if it was mounted in the triple tree?  On some videos I see the oil  level checked out of bike, forks being held straight up and others where it is checked with them on the bike?  Is there enough of a difference for it to matter which way you check?
Other then fork level and oil type, I could not find that info.

Yes, the proper way is as Springy says, but the difference in distance can be no more than 2-3mm if you measure while they are in the triple clamps. 
If you're careful and measure at the midline of the tube, the measuremens will be the same on or off the bike.

My procedure is to set the oil height straight up when I've rebuilt the forks or had them off the bike, but I wouldn't bother taking the legs out of the triples if I was only making an adjustment in oil height or changing the setting on my emulator valves.

  Keep a record of the amount of oil you used, to make it quicker and easier next time.  Regards,  Pete.
