Problem mounting givi wingrack to my '90

I've run into a slight problem with my '90 FJ1200
I am trying to mount a Givi Wingrack on it, and cant quite seem to figure out to orientation of the u-clamp.
If anyone has mounted one of these, and can either look at theirs, or remember if they had to modify any of the rear fender/plastics to fit it on there?
I have the instructions(exploded view, not entirely helpful), and it shows the u-clamp mounted with the "U" at the bottom, and the bolt with the spacer on top of the frame tube. it also shows it located between the seat latch, and the wire bungee strap that is welded to the frame......
The problem I'm having is if I install it the way the picture shows, then the (bolt with the spacer) interferes with my tail cowl and I cannot bolt it down.  If I rotate the u-clamp so that the "U" is at the top, and the bolt with spacer is at the bottom of the frame tube, I can bolt down my tail cowl, but then the tail side plastics will not fit on, and the bolt with spacer interferes with the rear fender plastic , and would force me to drill a hole in it.......
I am pretty certain I must install this u-clamp because the wingrack seems pretty flimsy without it.
Everything else mounts the way it should. The rear bracket that bolts where your factory turn signal mounted to, and the bracket that bolts to the passenger footpeg. Just doesn't seem that the U-clamp will fit right without modifying something.

Hi Alan,

I have one mounted on my 91 so it should be exact same. yes, I believe  I mounted the U clamp upside down , and I had the same dilema with the bolt touching the rear side plastic below the tailfin.  I grounded off the end of the bolt so that I had about 2-3mm clearance of the plastic.  I remember I had to play with it to get it right, and then tightened it down.  If you like I can take pics of it...

I remember that having the U bolt a bit off from vertical prevented things from lining up.
It's been a few years, but here are pictures of my Givi install: http://picasaweb.google.com/bnemec/2003GiviInstall#

Dunno if it will help, but here's what mine looks like:

This may not help, but on my '84 I have the bolt on top with bracket beneath.  looking at Bob's pics the sub frame on my '84 is identical to the later models with the exception of the location and size of the tie down loops-located next to the rear turn signal mounts.  I would strongly recommend additional reinforcement at the turn signal mounts.  I have E41 side cases and mine snapped the mounts at the welds (crappy welds I might add).  Mind you, this happened after a week, running the cases empty; No over loading here.  I re-welded the mounts (this time with nice clean welds on the front and rear of the turn signal mount tab; on my year the tabs were only welded on the front) and had a friend fabricate a brace made out of stainless steel that greatly reinforces the entire setup. Here are some pics of the bracket and the wingrack, with cases on;

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Dennis

Thank you guys!!!!  :good:
Very Helpful!!!!
I love this group!
It looks like i am trying to mount it correctly. I will just have to tighten it up nice and tight, and then maybe slight grinding where it interferes with the tail bodywork.....Will work on it more this weekend.

Holy Jeebus, Dennis...are those sidecases or flotation devices? Outriggers? That thing's wider than my WeeStrom (45L Givis).

Yup... I remember being very conscious of how wide my rear end was after installing the Givis.  And the FJ was wide too.

Yeah, its a good thing we don't have legal lane splitting here.  The E41s are big cases, but I like that I can fit a large helmet in them.  They're pretty roomy.  But I really like the combo lock hatches on the top;  It makes them super useable.  I also have to admit I kinda dig how big they are, especially with the admore lighting kit I added;  I was rear ended a long time ago, so anything I can do to get a cage to notice me is gravy.  I got pulled over last week by a cop whose only reason for stopping me was that he was psyched by how bright the rear end lit up with all of my lights.  He wanted to know where I got everything from so he could do the same to his Blackbird.
