Maybe a heat gun to get all the rubber bits more pliable. Been a while since I had an air box. Check to see if the rubber boots are eccentric, I think they might be. If so then rotate them till they align better.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

These boots are eccentric, so, as you rotate them their position changes, up, down, left and right, individually.

These lugs locate them in the correct position to line up with the carbies. If they are not lined up it makes a difficult job even harder, or, even impossible.

The singular lug on the boot sits between the two lugs on the box.

i might try that i have a hair dryer  :bad:, i wonder if it's only yamaha that makes airboxes so tight, or is it like a heater core replacement, all of them are nightmares?

if i give up, that will be my choice, the singles i had in there from the PO fit just as poorly as the airbox and they  are ugly and they suck bigtime
