I own a 1990 fj1200 and am replacing my chain and both sprockets. Rear sprocket replaced no problem. The counter sprocket cover I am having a hell of a time getting it off. I have removed the three small bolts (maybe there are more?) and removed the shifter, but cannot get the cover to budge. I looked online at the various fj1200 manuals posted in the forum but could not find a picture of this cover so I maybe missing something? Any advise would be very much appreciated!

The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Be careful remounting. I wasn't paying attention when remounting my slave and cover, and stripped out a slave bolt once. It was a real pain in the a** to fix. Very little clearance to put a helicoil in.

My question is about removing the sprocket cover. Slave is already disconnected (new one just arrived from RPM). When I removed the slave and discovered all the gunk in there, I started wondering about what was under the sprocket cover.  Then I discovered that the lower right bolt was missing. I'm trying to figure out how to remove the sprocket cover and what parts might be needed and replaced. Does the sprocket cover just slide over the end of the shift shaft and I just need a new gasket or are there other parts that I will need.  I can't tell from the microfiche and Haynes.  Thanks.

There is a paper gasket under the cover that prevents oil from the chain to get onto the alternator or the engine. That one is probably bust.
Yes, you just slide it from the shift shaft with some wiggling.

No need to worry about the gasket, It really does nothing and IMO is a waste of money to purchase. Install the cover without the gasket and you will never know the difference and you will have a bit of extra cash left in your wallet.

Thanks for the help. Evidently the missing bolt didn't serve any purpose either, but  I think I will replace it anyway.
