Hello,

so I've read in the service manual that when removing the valve cover there are two pins that you need to be careful of.  The book doesn't mention their location and I can find no mention of them on this site.  1 1/2 hours of searching (though I could not be entering the "right term"!).  Also the manual mentions using some type of sealant on the 4 "half moon" pieces of the gasket but most posts concerning this topic suggest not using anything.

I know the sealant issue is a severely beaten horse but can anyone give me an idea of the location of the pins so that as I am taking the cover off, I sort of know where to look so they don't fall in?

Many thanks and this site is the best!!

I am not aware of any pins and I have adjusted the valves many times. They may be pressed in to the head to help index the cover.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Negative.
There are no pins on any of the valve covers I have ever taken off of FJ engines. 1100 or 1200.
There are also only (2) half-moons on the right (throttle) side of the engine, not 4.

Well that's good to hear.  Nothing worse than the sound of something falling into an engine!

I just helped helped a friend today adjust the valves on his '89 and no pins were found.

I'm currently in the middle of a valve adjust on my '93.  No pins...

Here is what prompted the question.  It comes from the Hayes workshop manual.

Thanks for the replies.  I should be replacing the gasket tomorrow.

The head has unused holes that could be for a dowel pin. But the gasket and cover do not. So no pins here on the FJ...

I believe the dowels/pins that are being asked about and referenced in the provided link are #3 in my attached drawing. Those dowels fit between the Cylinder block and the Head.

Just changed it this morning, all is well!  The hardest part was taking off the 8 rubber gaskets from the hold down bolts!  As the music group Stain would say, "it's been a while".
