Oil pump drive gear

Just pulling my 84' down and the oil pump drive gear is loose

There is no play (wear) on the splines but it moves freely back and forth on the length of the shaft.
There is just the circlip on the front and a thrust washer behind.
Normal ?

There is play on the oil pump side to compensate for expansion as the other gear is bearing mounted.

The snap ring groove is where the wear is the most prevalent.
